Chapter 3 - The Hidden Truth

The next morning broke with clear, pale sunlight streaming through the tall windows of the Vance estate. Ethan woke up in an enormously soft bed, surrounded by warm blankets. For a moment, he thought he was dreaming, but the smell of fresh pancakes and bacon drifting up from the kitchen reminded him that the nightmare of the streets was over.
Downstairs in the dining room, Daisy was already seated in a high chair, happily coloring in a book while Martha fed her fresh fruit. Arthur sat at the head of the long mahogany table, a mountain of legal files spread out before him.
"Good morning, Ethan," Arthur said, gesturing toward an empty chair laden with food. "Did you sleep well?"
"Yes, Grandpa. Better than I have in a long time," Ethan answered quietly, sitting down.
Before Ethan could finish his breakfast, the double doors of the dining room opened, and Thomas stepped inside. His face was grim, and he carried a heavy, dust-covered metal box in his hands.
"We retrieved it, sir," Thomas reported. "And you were right. Sterling had two private investigators watching the building. My team detained them quietly. They were under orders to destroy anything left in that apartment today."
Arthur’s eyes turned to flint. "Bring the box here."
Thomas placed the metal box in front of Arthur. Ethan reached into his pocket, produced the tiny brass key, and handed it to his grandfather.
Arthur inserted the key into the hidden lock at the base of the box. With a sharp click, the false bottom sprang open, revealing a thick stack of letters tied with a pink ribbon, a small flash drive, and a handwritten diary.
Arthur untied the ribbon and unfolded the first letter. It was written in Clara’s elegant handwriting, dated twelve years ago. As Arthur read the lines, his breath hitched in his throat.
Dearest Papa, the letter began.
If you are reading this, it means I am either gone or unable to return to you. I am writing this because I discovered something terrible. Six months ago, I accidentally overheard Richard Sterling speaking to Gregory Vance—your brother. They were plotting to poison your evening medicine to make your death look like a sudden stroke. They realized that if you died, I would inherit the entire Vance Enterprise.
When I tried to collect evidence to bring to you, Uncle Gregory found out. He threatened to kill you immediately if I said a word. He told me that if I disappeared quietly and gave up my rights to the family estate, he would let you live. I had no choice, Papa. I couldn't risk your life. I ran away under a false name, hiding in the shadows.
Sterling helped Gregory forge my resignation from the trust. They built a wall of lies around you, intercepted my letters, and convinced you that I ran away out of rebellion. Please forgive me, Papa. I only wanted to keep you alive.
Your loving daughter, Clara.
A loud crack echoed through the dining room as Arthur’s hand slammed down on the table, shattering a crystal glass. Tears of pure agony streamed down his face.
"My brother..." Arthur gasped, clutching his chest. "My own brother... and my trusted lawyer. They drove my daughter into poverty and let her die in exile!"
Ethan ran to Arthur's side, wrapping his small arms around his grandfather's waist. "Grandpa, don't cry. Mom loved you. She always told us that you were a good man."
Arthur looked down at his grandson, pulling the boy into a fierce embrace. The grief in Arthur's heart turned into a blinding, unstoppable fury.
"Thomas!" Arthur roared, standing up with majestic authority. "Call our head of security detail. Lock down all Vance Enterprise accounts. Prepare my private motorcade. We are going to the corporate headquarters."

"Sir, Sterling and your brother Gregory are attending the annual board meeting right now," Thomas informed him. "They are preparing to vote on transferring the remaining family trust funds to Gregory's offshore accounts."
"Perfect," Arthur said, a terrifying smile appearing on his face. "Then we shall give them a presentation they will never forget."
