Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confrontation

At the top floor of the Vance Tower in downtown Chicago, twenty board members sat around a polished oak conference table. At the head of the table sat Gregory Vance—a sharp-featured, slick man in his late fifties, wearing an expensive designer suit—and Richard Sterling, a cunning lawyer with silver-rimmed glasses.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Sterling announced, tapping his pen on a thick legal document. "As you know, my client, Gregory Vance, has managed the family assets admirably during Arthur Vance's recent... health leave. Since Arthur’s daughter Clara has been legally declared deceased, and Arthur himself has failed to produce an heir, the entire Vance estate must now be transferred to Gregory to ensure company stability."

"Is Arthur aware of this final transfer?" one of the older board members asked, frowning slightly. "He hasn't been seen in public for three days."

"Arthur is old and grief-stricken," Gregory interjected smoothly, leaning forward with a fake expression of sympathy. "He is no longer capable of making sound financial decisions. As his brother, it is my duty to handle these burdensome affairs."

"Sign the document, Gregory," Sterling urged, pushing a pen into his hand. "Let's finalize this before—"

BANG!

The heavy double doors of the boardroom were suddenly thrown open with such force that they bounced off the walls.

Everyone in the room gasped and jumped to their feet.

Walking through the doorway was Arthur Vance. He wore a crisp, dark suit, his posture straight as iron, his presence radiating immense power. On his left side stood Thomas, holding a leather briefcase. On his right side walked ten-year-old Ethan, dressed in a tailored navy suit, looking sharp and fearless. Behind them, two police officers and the District Attorney stepped into the room.

Gregory dropped his pen, his face turning as white as a sheet. "A-Arthur? What is the meaning of this?"

Sterling panicked, hastily trying to gather the documents on the table. "Arthur, this is a private board meeting! You can't just interrupt—"

"Silence, traitor!" Arthur’s voice boomed like thunder, echoing off the glass walls.

The room went completely dead quiet.

Arthur walked to the head of the table, ignoring his trembling brother, and placed his hands on the back of the chief executive chair. "Twelve years ago, my daughter Clara disappeared. For twelve years, I was lied to by the men sitting right here. I was told my daughter abandoned me. I was told she wanted nothing to do with this family."

Arthur pointed a commanding finger directly at Sterling and Gregory. "But last night, my daughter's children walked into my life. And they brought the truth with them."

The board members began whispering frantically among themselves.

"Children?" Gregory stammered, sweating profusely. "What children? Arthur, you're losing your mind! He's delusional!"

"Ethan," Arthur said softly, looking down at his grandson. "Tell the board who you are."

Ethan stepped forward, looking directly into the eyes of the man who had terrified his mother for a decade. His voice was clear and unwavering.

"My name is Ethan Vance. My mother was Clara Vance. And this man," Ethan pointed at Sterling, "came to our apartment after my mother died, stole her legal papers, and tried to pay people to throw me and my sister into the streets so we would never find our grandfather!"

Thomas stepped forward, opened his briefcase, and handed a stack of documents along with a flash drive to the District Attorney.

"These are the original letters written by Clara Vance," the District Attorney announced loudly to the room. "Along with bank statements showing illegal wire transfers from the Vance trust into offshore accounts controlled by Gregory Vance and Richard Sterling. Furthermore, we have audio recordings recovered from the flash drive detailing their extortion of Clara Vance."

Sterling collapsed back into his chair, covering his face in absolute despair. Gregory tried to make a dash for the side exit, but two armed police officers immediately intercepted him, forcing him to his knees and snapping handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Gregory Vance, Richard Sterling, you are under arrest for fraud, extortion, embezzlement, and conspiracy," the District Attorney stated firmly.

As the officers dragged the two screaming traitors out of the boardroom, Arthur stood tall, surrounded by the stunned board members. He placed a proud hand on Ethan's shoulder.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur proclaimed to the room. "The true heirs of Vance Enterprise have returned. And this company will now be dedicated to honoring my daughter's memory."
