Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The discovery of the micro-encoded data chip changed everything. Within forty-eight hours, Arthur’s elite cyber-security team managed to decrypt the files stored inside.
The contents were devastating. The chip contained full financial ledgers, wire transfer records, and classified communication logs proving that Lord Reginald Montgomery had been operating a vast, illegal smuggling ring operating through international shipping ports—and had been using high-ranking corporate executives, including Gregory Vance, to launder hundreds of millions of dollars.
Clara had stumbled upon the network during her internship. When Montgomery realized she had downloaded the evidence, he ordered her untraceable elimination. Clara had fled into hiding, carrying the chip with her, using her own disappearance as a shield to protect her father from becoming collateral damage.
"This is bigger than Vance Enterprise," Thomas remarked as he reviewed the decrypted files in the library. "If Montgomery realizes we have this chip, he won't just send lawyers, sir. He will send mercenaries."
"Let him send them," Arthur declared, his eyes flashing with a fierce, aristocratic rage. "He stole twelve years of my daughter's life. He forced her to live in fear and poverty. I want Montgomery brought to justice, and I want him to know exactly who brought him down."
"What is your plan, Mr. Vance?" Dr. Harrison asked, standing nearby.
Arthur looked over at Ethan, who was sitting quietly at the table, listening intently.
"We lure him out," Arthur said calmly. "Montgomery believes the chip was lost when Clara died. He thinks Sterling was just sweeping up loose ends. We will leak a private message through international banking channels indicating that Arthur Vance has acquired Lord Montgomery’s missing financial ledgers and is preparing to hand them over to Interpol in London."
"He will react immediately," Thomas warned. "He'll send his top operatives to retrieve the chip before it leaves the country."
"Precisely," Arthur replied, a dark, calculating smile touching his lips. "And when his mercenaries arrive at the estate tonight, they will walk straight into a trap prepared by local authorities and federal agents."
By six o'clock that evening, the Vance Estate was completely locked down. Ethan and Daisy were escorted to a reinforced safe room located deep beneath the main house, guarded by four heavily armed security officers.
"Ethan," Arthur said, kneeling in front of his grandson before closing the heavy steel vault door. "Stay inside with your sister. No matter what sounds you hear upstairs, do not come out until I open this door myself. Do you understand?"
"I understand, Grandpa," Ethan said, pulling his grandfather into a tight hug. "Be careful."
"Always, my boy," Arthur smiled, patting his back.
The steel vault door sealed shut with a heavy hydraulic hiss.
Upstairs, night fell over the estate. The lights inside the grand mansion were dimmed, creating the illusion of a quiet, unsuspecting household. Outside, hidden in the thick treeline surrounding the property, dozens of federal agents and Arthur’s private security detail lay in wait, concealed in the shadows.
At midnight, three unmarked black vans glided silently up the winding estate driveway, their headlights turned off. Twelve heavily armed men dressed in dark tactical gear stepped out, moving swiftly toward the glass doors of the conservatory.
The leader of the mercenary team raised a glass-cutter, silently cutting a circle into the door, reaching in to unlock the handle. They slipped inside like ghosts, raising their suppressed weapons as they swept through the dark hallways.
They made their way to the grand library, where the desk lamp was turned on, illuminating a leather briefcase resting in the center of the room.
The mercenary leader stepped forward, a cold smirk on his face. He opened the briefcase, finding the blue leather book and the micro-chip resting inside.
"Target acquired," the leader whispered into his tactical headset. "Moving to exit."
Suddenly, bright, blinding floodlights snapped on from every corner of the ceiling.
"Drop your weapons!" a thunderous voice boomed over the estate’s loudspeaker system. "You are surrounded by federal agents! Stand down immediately!"
The mercenaries panicked, aiming their weapons toward the glass windows, but before they could squeeze a single trigger, tear gas canisters crashed through the glass, filling the room with thick white smoke. Snipers positioned on the surrounding hills fired precise, non-lethal shots, disabling the operatives one by one.
Within ten chaotic minutes, all twelve mercenaries were disarmed, hand-cuffed, and forced onto the marble floor of the foyer.

Arthur stepped down the grand staircase, looking down at the captured leader with supreme disdain.
"Tell Lord Montgomery," Arthur said softly, leaning down to look the leader in the eye, "that his flight to London has been canceled."
