The house was always too quiet.
Not the peaceful kind of quiet.
The kind of silence that made an eight-year-old child feel like she was taking up too much space.
Lily learned that after her father married Vanessa.
From the outside, their home looked perfect.
A beautiful suburban house.
White fences.
Carefully trimmed gardens.
Large windows reflecting the sunlight.
A place where everyone would think a happy family lived.
But inside those walls…

Laughter.
Warmth.

Lily remembered when her father, Daniel, was different.
Before Vanessa.
He used to lift Lily onto his shoulders and spin her around the living room.
“You’re my little star,” he would say.
She believed she always would be.
But after the wedding, Daniel slowly changed.
He worked longer hours.
He smiled less.
He became tired in a way Lily didn’t understand.

Vanessa was always watching.
She was beautiful, elegant, and polite.
But Lily noticed the difference between the way Vanessa acted in front of Daniel and when they were alone.
“Sweetheart,” Vanessa would say with a smile when Daniel was nearby.

No kindness.

Only distance.
Then came the school project.
For two weeks, Lily worked on it secretly.
It wasn’t just homework.
It was her heart turned into paper.
She created a scrapbook.
The title was:
“My Family Is My Heart.”
Inside were drawings of Daniel holding her hand.
Pictures of their family.
Even Vanessa.
Lily had drawn her with flowers around her because she thought maybe stepmothers wanted to feel special too.
On the last page, she wrote:
“Thank you for being my family.”
She wrapped it carefully with a ribbon saved from her birthday.
That morning, she placed it on the dining table.
Her little heart raced.
“Dad will love it.”
“And maybe Vanessa will smile.”
