PART 3 — The Truth Behind Closed Doors

That night, Daniel waited until Lily fell asleep.

Then he went downstairs.

The trash bin was still there.

The same place where his daughter’s heart had been thrown away.

He opened it.

Inside were the torn pieces of paper.

Small drawings.

Crayon marks.

A child’s attempt to create a perfect family.

Daniel picked up one picture.

It showed him holding Lily’s hand.

All three of them smiling.

A family.

Something inside him tightened.

Because suddenly he remembered.

How many times had Lily asked Vanessa to play?

How many times had she become quiet after being told no?

How many times had Daniel been too busy to notice?

He thought back.

The small comments.

The cold looks.

The strange silence.

And he realized something terrifying.

His daughter had been trying to tell him.

He just wasn’t listening.

Upstairs, Vanessa stood behind the door.

Watching.

Waiting.

Daniel turned around.

And saw her.

“What else have you done?” he asked.

Her expression stayed calm.

“What do you mean?”

“With Lily.”

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“You’re overreacting.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

His voice was different now.

“You’re hiding something.”

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Only for a second.

But Daniel noticed.

The next morning, he started paying attention.

Really paying attention.

He saw how Lily became nervous whenever Vanessa entered the room.

How she apologized for small things.

How she asked permission to simply exist.

And every little detail felt like another piece of a puzzle.

A puzzle Daniel wished he had never needed to solve.
