Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Syndicate

News travels like wildfire through the underworld, especially when it concerns a power vacuum. For three years, Vincent Santangelo had ruled his family with a solemn, detached cruelty following the death of his heir, Anthony. Many in the five families assumed the Santangelo bloodline was dead, and ambitious underbosses were already quietly sharpening their knives for the day the old Wolf finally faltered.
In a dimly lit back room of a high-end Italian restaurant downtown, Paulie "The Cleaver" Varga, Vincent’s long-time underboss, sat across from two lieutenants. Paulie was a heavy-set man with ruthless eyes and a deep-seated ambition that had only been kept in check by Vincent's absolute iron grip.
"Is it true?" Paulie growled, slicing into a rare steak. "The old man brought a woman and a kid into the estate?"
"It’s true, Paulie," replied Sal, one of his trusted ear-to-the-ground soldiers. "Frankie took them out of the cemetery this morning. Word from the staff is the kid looks just like Anthony. He's claiming the boy is his grandson."
Paulie dropped his fork, the metal clattering loudly against the china. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "A grandson? Out of nowhere? After four years?"
"A waitress from the 4th Street diner," Sal added. "Name’s Sarah Chen. Nobody knew Anthony was seeing her."
Paulie leaned back, chewing slowly as his mind worked through the implications. "If the old man has an heir... a real Santangelo heir... all our plans go up in smoke. The territory stays with his blood."
"Unless the kid isn't his," the second lieutenant chimed in. "Or unless the kid... doesn't make it to his fifth birthday."
Paulie slapped the table, leaning forward with a terrifying intensity. "Don't be a fool! If you touch a hair on that boy's head and Vincent finds out, he'll skin us alive and feed us to the dogs in the harbor! No. We play this smart."
"What do you mean?"
"Vincent is old, but he isn't stupid," Paulie said slyly. "He's blinded by grief right now. He sees his dead son's ghost in a brat's eyes. We find out who this Sarah Chen really is. We dig up every piece of dirt on her past, every man she ever slept with. If we can prove that kid isn't Anthony's—or if we can manufacture proof—Vincent will destroy her himself, and the family falls right back into our laps."
Meanwhile, back at the estate, Dr. Mercer had just finished examining Tommy in the sunlit parlor. The little boy was sitting on the floor, deeply engrossed in a massive electric train set that Frankie had spent two hours setting up.
"It was a mild middle-ear infection, Vincent," Dr. Mercer said, writing out a prescription. "A week of antibiotics and proper nutrition, and he’ll be good as new. The child is slightly underweight, but otherwise completely healthy."
Vincent stood by the window, watching Sarah help Tommy guide the miniature train around a plastic mountain. "And the DNA test, Doctor?"
Dr. Mercer pulled a small swab kit from his leather medical bag, speaking in hushed tones. "I took the cheek swabs while administering the ear drops, as you requested. I'll run it through my private lab personally. Results in forty-eight hours. Absolute discretion guaranteed."
Vincent stared out at the gardens, his jaw set firm. "I know in my heart he is my blood. I don't need a paper to tell me that. But the men... the family... they will need undeniable proof."
"Understood, Don Vincent," Dr. Mercer nodded, taking his leave.
Vincent walked over to the floor where Tommy was playing. The boy looked up, holding a tiny plastic conductor figurine. "Look, Big Man! The train goes choo-choo!"
Vincent smiled, dropping down onto the carpet despite his stiff knees. "Big Man, huh? Is that what you're going to call me?"
"Mama said you're my Grandpa," Tommy said innocently, his brown eyes searching Vincent's face. "Are you?"
May you like
Vincent felt a lump form in his throat—a feeling he hadn't experienced since he was a young man. He reached out with a trembling, calloused hand and gently ruffled the boy's dark curls.
"Yes, Tommy," Vincent said softly, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "I am your Grandpa. And I am never going to let anything happen to you again."
