Chapter 7 - Lessons in the Garden

Back at the estate, oblivious to the storm brewing in the city's underbelly, Tommy was discovering a world he had never known existed.

The vast manicured gardens of the estate became his kingdom. He spent his mornings chasing butterflies across the lawns and his afternoons sitting on a marble bench beside the koi pond, throwing breadcrumbs to the bright orange fish.

Vincent spent every spare moment with the boy. The cold, ruthless warlord was slowly being dismantled by the pure, unconditioned love of a child. He taught Tommy how to tie his shoes, how to feed the fish, and how to pronounce difficult words in Italian.

Sarah watched them from the porch, holding a warm cup of tea. Mrs. Gable stepped up beside her, placing a gentle hand on Sarah's shoulder.

"I haven't seen Mr. Santangelo smile like that since Anthony was a little boy," Mrs. Gable said softy. "You brought life back into a house that was waiting to die, Sarah."

"I'm still scared, Mrs. Gable," Sarah admitted, watching Vincent laugh as Tommy tried to ride a small wooden rocking horse on the grass. "He lives in a world of violence. Every time he leaves through those iron gates, I wonder if he's coming back."

"Vincent is a dangerous man, yes," Mrs. Gable agreed quietly. "But his violence has always been a shield to protect the people he loves. He failed to protect Anthony from that drunk driver... and he carried that guilt like a cross. Protecting Tommy is his redemption. He will burn the world to ashes before he lets any harm come to that boy."

Later that afternoon, Vincent sat with Tommy in the estate's vast library. The little boy was sitting on Vincent's lap, turning the pages of a large book on vintage automobiles.

"Grandpa," Tommy said suddenly, looking up with his wide, gold-flecked eyes. "Where is my Daddy?"

The question hung in the quiet library like a fragile glass ornament. Vincent felt his breath catch in his throat. He wrapped his arms a little tighter around the boy.

"Your daddy... is in heaven, Tommy," Vincent said, his voice unusually soft. "He was a very brave, very good man."

"Does he miss us?"

"Every single second of every single day," Vincent replied, tears pricking the corners of his own eyes. "And he watches over you. Right up there in the sky."

Tommy looked out the high arched window at the bright blue clouds, satisfied with the answer. "He sent you to take care of us, right?"

Vincent swallowed hard, pressing his forehead against the child's soft curls. "Yes, Tommy. He sent me to take care of you."

At that moment, Sarah stepped into the library doorway. She saw the powerful mob boss holding her son, crying silent tears of love and grief. The last remnants of her fear and resentment toward Vincent Santangelo evaporated into the warm afternoon light.

She knew then that whatever monster Vincent might be to the outside world, to her son, he was a savior.
