Chapter 5 - Blood and Ink

Forty-eight hours passed in a blur of transformation at the estate.

The quiet, museum-like halls of the Santangelo manor were suddenly alive with the sounds of childhood. Tricycles sat in the marble hallway; colorful picture books lined the mahogany shelves of the library alongside ancient leather-bound classics; and the sweet scent of fresh-baked cookies replaced the sterile smell of wax and polish.

Sarah sat in the sunroom, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater provided by the estate staff. She looked rested for the first time in years, the dark circles under her eyes finally fading. But her soul remained restless.

Vincent entered the sunroom, carrying a thick yellow envelope. He sat down across from her, his expression unreadable.

Sarah’s breath hitched. She knew what was in the envelope. "The test results?"

Vincent didn't speak. He simply opened the flap and pulled out the legal document, sliding it across the glass table.

Sarah’s eyes scanned the formal medical jargon until they landed on the bolded conclusion at the bottom of the page: PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.99% - CONFIRMED BIOLOGICAL GRANDSON.

Tears sprang to Sarah’s eyes, a mixture of relief and lingering grief. "I told you the truth, Vincent. I would never lie about something like this."

"I never doubted you in my heart, Sarah," Vincent said softly. "But in my position, certainty is a weapon I must possess. Now no man in this city can question who Tommy is."

He leaned back, his dark eyes fixing on her with intensity. "Which brings us to the next matter. You are a Santangelo now, whether you like it or not. The streets know you are here. My enemies know you are here. Living as a helpless waitress is over."

Sarah tensed. "What are you saying?"

"I am setting up a trust fund for Tommy," Vincent explained smoothly. "Fifty million dollars, maturing on his twenty-first birthday. In addition, I am transferring ownership of the estate's real estate holdings into your name. You will never want for anything again."

Sarah shook her head violently, pushing the papers back across the table. "No! No, Vincent, I don't want your money! I didn't bring Tommy here to take your fortune! I just wanted my son to be safe and fed!"

"And how do you think you can keep him safe in this world without power?" Vincent challenged, his voice rising with dark authority. "Money is not luxury, Sarah—it is armor! It is walls, guards, lawyers, and influence! Do you think the men I deal with will care that you are humble and modest? If they see you as weak, they will use you to get to me, or they will kill Tommy to extinguish my line!"

Sarah recoiled, the harsh reality of his world slamming into her like a physical force.

"You must learn to navigate this life," Vincent said, softening his tone slightly as he saw her fear. "I am old, Sarah. I have lived by the sword, and I know how my story ends. But before I go to join my son, I will make sure my grandson is untouchable. And you must be strong enough to stand beside him."

Before Sarah could respond, the heavy oak doors of the sunroom burst open. Frankie walked in, his face grim, holding a encrypted satellite phone.

"Boss," Frankie said curtly, glancing nervously at Sarah. "We have a problem downtown. Paulie called an emergency meeting of the Capos. He's making moves."

Vincent stood up slowly, the gentle grandfather vanishing in an instant, replaced by the formidable Don whose name made the city tremble.

"Let him try," Vincent said coldly. "Frankie, get the car. It's time I reminded Paulie Varga who runs this family."
