Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Ashes

The tenement building near the train tracks smelled of damp rot, cheap disinfectant, and industrial exhaust.

Dante followed the three girls up four flights of creaking wooden stairs, his polished boots heavy against the sagging steps. Nico and Lorenzo followed closely behind, their hands drawn near their weapons as they monitored the dark, trash-strewn landings.

Maya stopped at the end of a dim hallway, outside Door 4B. The yellow paint was peeling, and a handwritten sign taped over the keyhole read: DO NOT DISTURB.

"She's inside," Maya whispered, her small fingers reaching up to grip the brass door handle. "She told us to lock it, but the latch is broken."

Dante stepped forward, gently pushing Maya behind him. "Stay behind Nico, girls."

He reached out and pushed the door open. It swung inward with a low, mournful creak.

The apartment was barely larger than a storage unit. A single cracked window looked out onto an alleyway, covered by a faded bedsheet acting as a curtain. In the corner, sitting on a low wooden table, were dozens of small canvases—all depicting the same scene: a sunlit meadow, an old stone wall, and the blurred silhouette of a tall man holding out his hand.

On a mattress resting directly on the cold hardwood floor lay a woman wrapped in a thin, tattered quilt.

Her dark-blond hair was matted with sweat, her breathing shallow and raspy. Her skin was deathly pale, save for the bright, unnatural flush of a high fever on her cheekbones.

Dante took two steps into the room, his breath catching in his throat.

Despite the thinness of her frame, despite the shadows under her closed eyes, despite seven long years of absence—it was her.

"Elena," he choked out, the name tearing from his chest like a physical wound.

He dropped to his knees beside the mattress, ignoring the dirt and dust, and reached out with a trembling hand. His long fingers hovered above her cheek, terrified that if he touched her, she would vanish like a phantom created by his own broken mind.

Gently, his fingertips brushed her skin. She was burning hot.

At the sound of his voice, Elena stirred. Her dark eyelashes fluttered open slowly, clouded with the haze of delirium and sickness. She turned her head toward him, her vivid green eyes struggling to focus on the massive, dark figure kneeling beside her bed.

"Who..." her voice was a dry, broken whisper, barely audible over the hum of the nearby train tracks. "Who are you...?"

Dante felt a tear cut through the dust on his cheek. "It's me, Elena. It's Dante."

She stared at him, her eyes wandering over his face—tracing the high cheekbones, the faint scar across his jawline, the dark brown eyes that burned with a fierce, desperate intensity. A flicker of recognition passed over her features—a split second of sudden, intense terror—followed immediately by a sharp gasp of pain. She pressed her palms against her temples, her body curling into a tight ball.

"My head..." she whimpered, her teeth chattering from the fever. "It hurts... please... don't let them take the girls..."

"Nobody is taking anyone," Dante declared, his voice instantly hardening into iron. He reached down and wrapped his arms beneath her thin body, lifting her into his chest as easily as if she were made of feathers.

Elena gasped, her hands instinctively clutching his lapels. Her face pressed into the crook of his neck, and for a fraction of a second, her body relaxed into his familiar warmth, recognizing the scent of cedarwood and rain that had belonged to her past.

"Nico!" Dante barked, standing up with Elena cradled securely in his arms. "Get the car ready! Call Dr. Rossi. Tell him to clear the top floor of the private clinic in Beacon Hill. If he isn't waiting at the door when we arrive, I'll tear his hospital down stone by stone!"

"On it, Boss!" Nico shouted, pulling out his phone and sprinting down the stairs.

Dante turned to the three little girls standing terrified in the doorway. He looked down at Maya, who was watching him with wide, tear-filled eyes.

"Lorenzo," Dante said, keeping his voice steady for the children. "Carry the girls. Bring every painting in this room. Leave nothing behind."

"Yes, Mr. Russo," Lorenzo replied, gathering the three sisters gently into his arms.

As Dante carried Elena down the dark staircase, her hot breath fanning against his neck, she murmured a single, unconscious word against his skin:

May you like

"...Dante..."

His heart shattered into a thousand pieces. She didn't remember her own life, she didn't remember her own past, but deep within the shattered depths of her mind, his name remained.
