Chapter 9 - The House on the Bluff

Three months later.

Spring had arrived in coastal Massachusetts, bringing warm breezes and bright green leaves to the rolling estate on the bluffs of Manchester-by-the-Sea.

The Russo estate—a magnificent stone manor overlooking the blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean—was no longer a cold, dark fortress guarded by silent men in suits.

It was alive with sound.

Laughter echoed across the manicured lawns. In the garden near the cliffside, three identical six-year-old girls in bright yellow summer dresses were chasing two golden retriever puppies across the grass, their joyful screams carrying over the sound of the crashing waves below.

Dante stood on the expansive stone terrace, holding a cup of hot black coffee.

He was wearing comfortable casual clothes—a soft navy sweater and dark trousers. The terrifying gangster of Newbury Street had been replaced by a man whose heart was completely anchor-bound to the family playing on the lawn.

A pair of soft arms wrapped around his waist from behind.

Dante smiled, laying his broad hand over Elena's smooth fingers. He turned in her arms and pulled her against his chest, kissing the top of her head.

Elena looked stunning. Her dark-blond hair tumbled over her shoulders in rich waves, her green eyes clear, bright, and completely free of the terror that had once haunted them. On her left ring finger sparkled a massive, flawless emerald ring—a replacement for the silver band he had given her years ago.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly, resting her chin on his chest.

"I was thinking about Newbury Street," Dante admitted, looking out at the ocean. "I was thinking about how close I came to just keeping my eyes straight and walking past that boutique."

Elena reached up, her thumb gently tracing the line of his jaw. "You could never walk past us, Dante. Even when my mind was broken, my heart knew you would come. That's why I painted that picture."

"Daddy! Look!" Lily shouted from the lawn, running up the stone steps holding a bright yellow dandelion. "Look what I found for Mom!"

Dante laughed, bending down to scoop Lily up into his left arm, while Chloe ran up the steps and attached herself to his right leg. Maya walked up more maturely, holding a small canvas under her arm.

"What do you have there, Maya?" Dante asked, leaning down so she could show him.

Maya held up her canvas. It was a beautiful oil painting—rough, but surprisingly detailed for a six-year-old—depicting a grand stone house on a cliff, five people holding hands on the lawn, and a bright red heart painted in the sky above them.

"I painted our new memory," Maya said proudly, her chin lifting with that same fierce pride she had shown on the freezing sidewalk three months ago.

Dante felt a lump form in his throat. He set Lily down, knelt on the warm stone terrace, and gathered all three of his daughters and his wife into a single, unbreakable embrace.

"It's the most valuable painting in the world," Dante whispered into Maya's hair.
