Chapter 7 - The Reckoning at the Seaport

The rain had returned to Boston, drumming a relentless rhythm against the industrial shipping containers of the Seaport district.
Outside The Black Pearl—a multi-story luxury nightclub owned by the Vane family—the neon lights flickered against the wet pavement. The club was closed to the public, the heavy iron doors locked from the inside, guarded by six heavily armed men standing in the shadows of the alleyway.
At precisely four o’clock, a heavy armored black truck smashed through the alleyway barricades, pulverizing the steel gates in a cloud of sparks and twisted metal.
Before the guards could raise their weapons, Dante’s men poured out from the back of the vehicle with clinical, terrifying precision.
The alleyway erupted in gunfire.
Dante stepped out of the lead vehicle, moving through the smoke and crossfire like an immovable force of nature. He didn't duck, he didn't hesitate. Every step he took was measured, lethal, and relentless.
Within three minutes, the outer guards were neutralized.
Lorenzo set a breaching charge against the thick oak doors of the nightclub.
BOOM!
The doors splintered inward, blowing off their hinges.
Dante walked into the cavernous, dimly lit nightclub. The smell of gunpowder, expensive whiskey, and ozone filled the air. Broken glass littered the polished marble dance floor.
Sitting on a leather booth at the far end of the room, flanked by two bodyguards holding assault rifles, was Matteo Vane.
Matteo was a man in his late fifties, with slicked-back gray hair, a pinstripe suit, and a cruel, arrogant sneer that hadn't faded despite the breach.
"Dante," Matteo called out over the ringing echoing in the room. "You always were theatrical. All this noise for a woman who was already half-dead when I found her?"
Dante walked down the center aisle, his shoes crunching on the glass. Nico and Lorenzo flanked him, their weapons pointed directly at Matteo's bodyguards.
"Why, Matteo?" Dante asked, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. "You wanted my shipping docks. You wanted my territory. Why take her?"
Matteo chuckled, taking a slow sip from a crystal glass of whiskey on his table.
"Because taking your territory wasn't enough, Dante," Matteo said, his eyes glinting with pure malice. "Your father killed my brother thirty years ago in a dock war. I swore I would make the Russo family bleed for generations. I couldn't kill you—you were too well protected. But your sweet, innocent Elena?"
Matteo leaned forward, his sneer widening into a demonic grin.
"Staging her crash was so easy. Watching you weep over a burnt corpse in Cambridge was the greatest day of my life. I was going to kill her, but my brother had a better idea—erase her mind, drop her in the gutters, and let her rot slowly while you lived in an empty, miserable mansion."
Matteo looked up at Dante, his voice dropping to a hiss. "And the best part? Those three little brats she squeezed out in that cold apartment—they were yours, Dante. They spent six years starving while you sat on four billion dollars!"
Dante didn't scream. He didn't rage.
The absolute, profound horror of Matteo's words settled into his chest, freezing into a diamond-hard resolve.
In a move so fast the human eye could barely track it, Dante drew his sidearm.
BANG! BANG!
Two rounds dropped Matteo's bodyguards before they could even twitch their fingers against their triggers.
Matteo dropped his glass, his face turning deathly pale as the realization of his situation finally hit him. He scrambled backward into the leather booth, reaching for a weapon concealed beneath the cushions.
Dante closed the distance in two giant strides, reaching across the table, grabbing Matteo by his silk necktie, and hauling the older man over the table, slamming his head brutally onto the granite bar.
"Please!" Matteo gasped, blood pouring from his nose, his arrogant sneer completely vanishing into sheer terror. "Dante! Wait! I have offshore accounts! Fifty million dollars! Take it! Just let me leave the city!"
Dante looked down into the eyes of the monster who had stolen seven years of his life, seven years of Elena's sanity, and six years of his daughters' childhood.

"You took my world, Matteo," Dante whispered, pressing the cold steel barrel of his weapon against Matteo's forehead. "Now I'm taking your breath."
BANG.
