Chapter 2 - THE PROTECTOR

Javier’s mind raced as he drove through the quieted streets toward the affluent residential enclave of Lomas de Chapultepec.

Through brief, cautious glances in his rearview mirror, he watched Valeria struggling against the heavy effects of whatever she had been subjected to. It quickly became clear to Javier’s trained eyes that this was not merely the result of drinking too much fine wine. Her breathing was irregular, her pupils were unnaturally dilated, and her motor control was deteriorating far too rapidly.

Someone at that dinner had deliberately laced her drink.

"Señora Mendoza," Javier said calmly, his voice acting as a steady anchor in the dim cabin. "Are you alright? Do you need me to pull over, or should I drive directly to a hospital?"

At the sound of her actual name, Valeria’s eyes snapped open. A flash of wild, instinctual panic crossed her pale face.

"How... how do you know who I am?" she rasped, her hands gripping the edge of the seat as she tried to sit up straight, attempting to reconstruct her corporate armor.

"I drive for the executive fleet assigned to your corporate headquarters on Avenida Insurgentes," Javier explained gently. "My name is Javier. You don't need to be afraid. You are completely safe in this car."

Valeria let out a ragged breath, her rigid posture instantly collapsing again. The terror in her eyes melted back into deep, crushing vulnerability.

"They... they took the files, Javier," she whispered, her voice cracking as tears finally spilled over her dark eyelashes, ruining her mascara. "My COO... Julian... and the board members from the expansion group. It was a trap. They waited until the public dinner to force my resignation. They had... photos... altered documents... they spiked my glass when I went to the restroom. They wanted me to make a public scene... to have the media catch me out on the street... completely compromised."

The terrifying puzzle pieces fell into place instantly.

If a high-profile female CEO was photographed intoxicated, incoherent, and stumbling out of a luxury establishment, the scandal would dominate the financial news by morning. The board would use the public spectacle as legal grounds to declare her unfit for leadership, stripping her of her voting rights and seizing control of the company before she could even defend herself.

As if summoned by her words, Javier noticed a dark, tinted SUV trailing two car lengths behind them. It had pulled out from the side alley near El Santuario the moment they left and had maintained a steady, ominous distance ever since.

"We have company," Javier muttered under his breath, evaluating his options.

"Paparazzi?" Valeria gasped, looking toward the rear window in a panic. "Or Julian's men... if they record me like this..."

"Not on my watch," Javier said firmly.

Years of driving through the chaotic, unpredictable grid of Mexico City had turned Javier into an expert navigator. He knew every alleyway, every hidden bypass, every unlit shortcut, and every dead-end street in the sector.

Instead of turning down the main boulevard toward her private estate—where the SUV could easily trap or film them—Javier executed a sudden, sharp right turn onto a narrow, cobblestone side street lined with dense jacaranda trees.

The SUV accelerated behind them, trying to close the gap.

Javier remained completely composed. He downshifted smoothy, accelerating through a series of rapid, tight turns through an older neighborhood, using the thick urban canopy to block the trailing vehicle's line of sight. He turned off his sedan's headlights for a brief, calculated ten seconds as he slipped into a covered, private alley beneath a disused commercial warehouse he knew from his old delivery days.

The dark SUV sped past the mouth of the alley, its tires screeching as it continued wildly down the main road, entirely unaware that its target had vanished into the shadows.

In the backseat, Valeria was trembling violently, her chest heaving as she held her breath.

Javier turned his headlights back on low beam and gently reversed out of the alley, taking a circuitous, completely secure route back toward her gated residential estate in Lomas de Chapultepec.

"They're gone," Javier said quietly. "You're safe."

Valeria leaned her forehead against the cool glass of the side window. "Why are you doing this, Javier? You could get fired for getting involved in this. If Julian finds out a fleet driver interfered..."

Javier met her eyes in the mirror. His gaze was steady, warm, and entirely unshakable.

"I have a seven-year-old daughter named Lucía," Javier answered softly. "Every night before I go to work, I look at her sleeping in her room, and I promise myself that I will be a man she can be proud of. Leaving a human being to be destroyed by wolves isn't something I could ever explain to my daughter."

Valeria stared at the back of Javier's head in stunned, speech-bound silence. The harsh, transactional world she inhabited was filled with executives, lawyers, and politicians who calculated every action based on personal gain, leverage, and power. She had forgotten that men like Javier even existed—men who acted out of pure, unvarnished integrity simply because it was the right thing to do.

Ten minutes later, Javier pulled up to the high security gates of her sprawling, private estate. He didn't just drop her off at the curb. He stepped out of the car, spoke directly to her trusted personal security guard at the gatehouse, and personally helped support her weight as they guided her safely inside the front foyer of her home.

Before he turned to leave, Valeria reached out with a trembling, cold hand, clutching his forearm. Her eyes, though still clouded by exhaustion and the residual effects of the drug, were fiercely focused on his face.

"Javier..." she murmured, her voice barely a whisper. "Thank you."

"Get some rest, Señora Mendoza," Javier replied respectfully, gently loosening her grip. "Tomorrow is a new day."
