Chapter 3 - THE MORNING AFTER

Javier arrived back at his small, modest two-bedroom apartment in a working-class neighborhood at three o'clock in the morning.
He was utterly exhausted, his muscles aching with bone-deep weariness, but his mind remained hyperactive, replaying the bizarre, high-stakes events of the night. He took a quick, cold shower to wash away the grime of the long shift, checked his phone to confirm that Lucía was sleeping peacefully at his sister's house, and finally collapsed onto his narrow bed.
When his alarm buzzed loudly at six-thirty AM, Javier dragged himself upright.
He drove across town to pick up Lucía from his sister's home. The moment he walked through Carmen's front door, his little girl ran down the hallway and threw her tiny arms around his waist, filling the apartment with her bright, innocent laughter.
"Papi! Did you drive a million cars last night?!" Lucía asked, her wide brown eyes shining as she looked up at him.
"At least a million, my love," Javier said with a warm smile, lifting her into his arms and kissing her forehead. "Come on, let's go home and make hot cinnamon oatmeal."
By ten o'clock that morning, Javier was standing in his small kitchen, wearing a faded cotton shirt, watching the oatmeal simmer on the stove while Lucía sat at the wooden table carefully coloring a drawing of a butterfly.
The morning was quiet, peaceful, and delightfully ordinary—a stark contrast to the shadowy intrigue of the night before. Javier had almost managed to convince himself that his encounter with the powerful Valeria Mendoza was nothing more than a surreal dream.
Suddenly, a loud, heavy knock echoed through the thin wooden front door of his apartment building.
Javier frowned, setting his wooden spoon down. His neighborhood was quiet on Saturday mornings, and he rarely received unexpected visitors.
He walked to the door, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled it open.
Standing in the narrow, dimly lit hallway was a tall, imposing man wearing a tailored black suit, earpiece, and polished leather shoes. Behind him, parked directly outside the building's worn brick entrance, sat two pristine, navy-blue executive SUVs with dark tinted glass—vehicles that looked entirely out of place in his working-class neighborhood.
"Javier Morales?" the suited man asked, his tone crisp, formal, and polite.
Javier stepped slightly back, instinctively shielding the view of his apartment interior where Lucía was playing. "Yes. I'm Javier. Can I help you?"
"My name is Marcos. I am Chief of Security for Mendoza Logistics," the man stated, bowing his head slightly. "Señora Valeria Mendoza requests your presence immediately at her primary residence."
Javier felt a cold spike of anxiety shoot through his chest. Had Julian's corporate faction tracked his car? Was he being terminated from his driving position for violating protocol?
"Look, Marcos," Javier said carefully, keeping his voice low. "I have my seven-year-old daughter here with me today. I can't just leave her."
Before Marcos could answer, the rear door of the second navy SUV opened.
Stepping out into the morning sunlight was Valeria Mendoza herself.
She looked utterly transformed from the shattered, vulnerable woman he had pulled out of the Polanco rain ten hours prior. She wore a stunning, tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, minimal gold jewelry, and oversized designer sunglasses. Her hair was perfectly styled, her posture was erect and powerful, and her face was a mask of supreme, unshakeable confidence.
She walked up the concrete steps of the apartment building, her high heels clicking firmly against the pavement. Marcos immediately stepped aside to clear her path.
Valeria stood at the open doorway of Javier's humble apartment. She removed her sunglasses, revealing clear, sharp, intelligent eyes that showed no trace of fear or weakness.
Javier stared at her, completely speech-bound.
"Good morning, Javier," Valeria said, her voice smooth, composed, and commanding, yet containing a underlying warmth directed entirely at him.
"Señora Mendoza..." Javier stammered, entirely caught off guard. "I... I didn't expect to see you here."
"I told you last night that I would remember," Valeria said simply.
Just then, Lucía popped her head out from behind Javier's leg, clutching her box of colored pencils, her big eyes wide with curiosity as she looked at the impeccably dressed woman standing in their hallway.
"Papi?" Lucía asked softly. "Who is the fancy lady?"
Valeria’s stern, professional demeanor instantly softened into a genuine, radiant smile. She dropped down onto one knee right there in the dusty hallway, bringing herself to eye level with the young girl.
"Hello there," Valeria said gently. "You must be Lucía."
Lucía nodded shyly. "How do you know my name?"
"Because your father talked about you last night," Valeria replied, looking up at Javier with an expression of profound, unspoken respect. "He told me that he works hard every single day just to make you proud."
Valeria stood back up, adjusting her jacket. She looked around the small, cramped hallway, then met Javier’s eyes with absolute seriousness.
"Javier, your shift with Mendoza Logistics as a contract chauffeur is officially over," she announced clearly.
Javier’s heart sank. Despite everything, he was being fired. He swallowed hard, trying to keep his composure in front of his daughter. "I understand, ma'am. I was just doing what I thought was right—"
"You misunderstand me, Javier," Valeria interrupted smoothly, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips. "You are no longer a chauffeur because as of eight o'clock this morning, following an emergency executive session where I purged Julian and his corrupt faction from my board of directors using the very evidence they tried to hide..."
She stepped closer, pulling a thick, gold-embossed leather folder from under her arm and handing it to him.

"...I have created a new position at our corporate headquarters. I am appointing you as the Director of Executive Protection and Fleet Logistics. Your starting salary will be four times what you currently earn, with full medical benefits, a guaranteed college trust fund for Lucía, and a corporate schedule that ensures you are home every single afternoon by four o'clock to eat tacos and help your daughter with her homework."
Javier stood frozen in his doorway, the heavy leather folder in his trembling hands, completely unable to process the magnitude of what she had just said.
