PART 7 — THE MAN WHO NEVER STOPPED WATCHING

Three weeks after the night everything changed, I thought the worst was finally over.
I wanted to believe that.
I needed to believe that.
Lily was sleeping peacefully again.
No more nightmares.
No more waking up at 2 a.m. crying that someone was coming for her.
Mason had stopped asking if his parents were going to disappear again.
And Brian…
Brian was recovering.
Slowly.
Painfully.
But he was alive.
The doctors said the injuries he suffered on the highway should have been worse.
Much worse.
They said someone wanted him found.
But they didn’t know who.
I did.
Ethan.
The name nobody wanted to say.
The name that had haunted our family for months.
The man who had been watching.
Waiting.
Planning.
But there was one thing nobody understood.
Why?
Why go through all of this?
Why target Lily?
The answer came at 3:17 in the morning.
The same hour everything started.
My phone rang.
I opened my eyes.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Because my body remembered.
The fear.
The panic.
The helpless feeling.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
My heart sank.
I answered.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then a voice.
A voice I had never heard.
But somehow recognized.
“You should have left things buried, Thomas.”
My blood ran cold.
“Ethan.”
A quiet laugh.
“So Brian finally told you.”
“Where are you?”
Another laugh.
“You think this is about catching me?”
I sat up.
“Then what is it about?”
The line went silent.
Then:
“It’s about making you understand.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Understand what?”
“That Lily was never the target.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
The voice became colder.
“Your family was.”
The call ended.
I immediately called the police.
But the damage was already done.
Because five minutes later…
My front door alarm went off.
Someone was outside.
I grabbed the flashlight beside my bed and walked downstairs.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Every instinct told me not to open that door.
Then I saw it.
A package.
Sitting on my porch.
No name.
No address.
Only one word written on top.
“MEMORIES.”
The police arrived before I touched it.
They opened it carefully.
Inside were photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Photos of my family.
Brian.
Marissa.
Mason.
Lily.
Me.
Taken over years.
Some from outside our home.
Some from places we never told anyone about.
Someone had been watching us for a long time.
The officer looked at me.
“This isn’t random.”
I knew.
Then we found the final photograph.
It was different.
It was recent.
Taken yesterday.
Lily was walking home from school.
A stranger stood behind her.
Watching.
My blood turned to ice.
“He was near her.”
The officer nodded.
“Yes.”
I felt something inside me break.
Because this time…
Ethan hadn’t attacked.
He had warned me.
He wanted me afraid.
And he succeeded.
But fear was temporary.
Anger lasted longer.
I called Brian.
He answered weakly.
“Dad?”
“Tell me everything.”
Silence.
Then:
“I knew he would come back.”
My jaw tightened.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“You almost got Lily killed!”
“I know.”
His voice broke.
“I know.”
For a moment, I heard my son again.
The little boy I raised.
The man who wanted to protect everyone.
“I made a mistake, Dad.”
“What mistake?”
A long pause.
Then he said:
“I trusted the wrong person.”
I waited.
“Ethan wasn’t just my friend.”
My chest tightened.
“What was he?”
Brian whispered:
“He was family.”
The room went silent.
“What does that mean?”
“He was my half-brother.”
I froze.
A secret.
Another secret.
“How long have you known?”
“Since before Lily.”
My hands shook.
“Brian…”
“I found out after my father died.”
My father.
My son’s grandfather.
A man who had been gone for years.
The past was coming back.
Piece by piece.
“He had another family,” Brian said.
“And Ethan believed we stole everything from him.”
I closed my eyes.
“So this was revenge?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But Lily…”
“What about Lily?”
Brian’s voice broke.
“She was never supposed to be involved.”
I looked at the photo again.
The stranger behind Lily.
Someone was still watching.
And now I understood.
Ethan didn’t want to destroy us.
He wanted us to destroy ourselves.
But he made one mistake.
He underestimated me.
Because I wasn’t the same man who answered that phone at 1:58 a.m.
I was no longer just a grandfather.
I was the person standing between Ethan and the child he tried to hurt.
And I was done waiting.
The next morning, I started my own investigation.
I found old records.
Old names.
Old secrets.
And one thing kept appearing.
A company.
A shell company.
Connected to Ethan.
Connected to my family.
And connected to one missing file.
The adoption file.
The file that started everything.
When I opened the final document…
I saw something impossible.
The signature.
The person who approved Lily’s adoption.
Wasn’t Brian.
Wasn’t Marissa.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been dead for five years.
My own father.
I stared at the paper.
May you like
And whispered:
“What did you do?”
