PART 8 — THE FAMILY SECRET

I spent the entire night reading.
Every document.
Every record.
Every hidden piece of information my family had buried.
And by sunrise, I realized something terrifying.
My father had known about Lily before anyone else.
Years before Brian met her.
Years before the adoption.
Years before Ethan came back.
My father had been connected to this from the beginning.
The question was:
Why?
I went through old boxes.
Things I hadn’t opened since his funeral.
Letters.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Then I found it.
A letter.
With one sentence written on the envelope.
“For Thomas. When the truth about Lily comes out.”
My hands started shaking.
My father had written this.
I opened it.
“My son,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect the people I loved.
There is something you need to know.
Lily’s mother came to me before Brian ever knew her.
She asked for help.
She was running from Ethan.
And she trusted me.”
I stopped.
My father knew.
He knew everything.
The letter continued.
“She told me Ethan was dangerous.
She told me Lily carried proof of what he had done.
I promised her I would keep the child safe.”
I sat back.
The room felt unreal.
My father had been protecting Lily too.
But why hide it from me?
The answer came in the next line.
“Because the less you knew, the safer you were.”
I closed my eyes.
All these years…
My own father had carried this secret.
Then the final sentence destroyed me.
“Ethan knows you exist.
And one day, he will come for you.”
The letter fell from my hands.
Because that day had come.
My phone rang.
The police.
They found something.
A location.
Ethan’s hideout.
For the first time, we had a chance.
But when we arrived…
He was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A wall covered with pictures.
Pictures of Lily.
Hundreds of them.
And in the middle…
A message.
“You were always one step behind.”
Then the lights turned off.
A voice came from the darkness.
“Not anymore.”
I turned.
Ethan was standing there.
Older than I imagined.
Calm.
Almost peaceful.
He looked at me.
And smiled.
“Thomas.”
I stared at him.
“You ruined my family.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at the pictures.
“Your family ruined mine.”
Then he said something I never expected.
“Lily’s mother wasn’t running from me.”
I froze.
“She was running from Brian.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
May you like
Ethan smiled.
“You still don’t know everything.”
