PART 9 — THE FINAL LIE

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

Ethan stood in front of me.

The man who had destroyed my family.

The man who had terrorized my grandchildren.

And he was telling me that Brian was the real danger.

I wanted to believe he was lying.

I needed him to be lying.

Because Brian was my son.

The child I raised.

The child I loved.

But the truth had become something terrifying.

Every time I thought I understood it…

Another secret appeared.

“Explain,” I said.

Ethan smiled.

“Still protecting him?”

My jaw tightened.

“Explain.”

He walked slowly toward the wall of photographs.

“You think Brian rescued Lily.”

He touched one picture.

“You think he was the hero.”

He looked back at me.

“But heroes don’t always save people.”

A long silence.

“Sometimes they create the disaster first.”

I felt anger rise.

“You expect me to believe you?”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I expect you to see.”

Then he threw a folder onto the table.

I opened it.

The first page was a police report.

The second was a medical record.

The third…

Was Lily’s original file.

Not the fake adoption file.

The real one.

My hands trembled.

I read.

And my heart broke.

Because there was something I never knew.

Lily’s biological mother didn’t disappear because of Ethan.

She disappeared because she was hiding from everyone.

Including Brian.

Years ago, Brian had been working with Ethan.

Not against him.

With him.

The security company.

The illegal operations.

Everything.

Brian wasn’t just a protector.

He was part of the problem.

I kept reading.

Then I found the part that changed everything.

Lily’s mother discovered what they were doing.

She threatened to expose them.

That was when she vanished.

I looked at Ethan.

“You’re saying Brian hurt her?”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“No.”

The answer surprised me.

“He didn’t.”

“Then what?”

“He tried to help her.”

I froze.

The story became more complicated.

“He wanted out,” Ethan continued.

“But he was too late.”

I stared at him.

“What happened?”

Ethan looked away.

“For the first time in his life, Brian chose the right thing.”

A pause.

“He betrayed me.”

I almost laughed.

“Then why destroy him?”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Because betrayal has a price.”

The room went quiet.

“You targeted children.”

His eyes darkened.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I targeted the people who lied.”

I stepped closer.

“Lily almost died.”

For the first time…

Ethan looked away.

And I saw something.

Regret.

Only for a second.

But it was there.

“I never wanted that.”

“Then why?”

“Because I lost control.”

Those words shocked me.

The man who seemed unstoppable admitted weakness.

Then my phone rang.

The hospital.

My heart dropped.

“Hello?”

A nurse answered.

“Mr. Thomas?”

“Yes?”

“It’s about Lily.”

Everything inside me froze.

“What happened?”

“She woke up.”

Relief.

Then:

“But someone visited her.”

My blood turned cold.

“Who?”

The nurse hesitated.

“She said it was her mother.”

I looked at Ethan.

He looked equally surprised.

“That’s impossible.”

I ended the call.

“Where is she?”

The nurse gave me the room number.

I ran.

When I reached the hospital, the hallway was empty.

Too empty.

I opened Lily’s room.

She was sitting up.

Awake.

Alive.

But crying.

I rushed to her.

“Sweetheart, what happened?”

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“Grandpa…”

“Yes?”

“She said she’s sorry.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

Lily looked toward the window.

“My real mom.”

I froze.

“Where is she?”

Lily pointed.

“She left.”

On the windowsill was a small envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Only three lines.

“Thomas,

I’m sorry I couldn’t protect her.

I’m sorry I waited too long.

But now you know the truth.”

At the bottom was a location.

And one final sentence.

“Come alone.”

I knew immediately.

It was a trap.

But there was one thing Ethan was wrong about.

I wasn’t fighting alone anymore.

I had spent my entire life protecting my family.

And now my family needed me.

I called Brian.

No answer.

I called the police.

Then I called Ethan.

He answered immediately.

“You know where she is?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then:

“Don’t go.”

That surprised me.

“You’re warning me?”

“No.”

His voice became serious.

“I’m telling you the truth.”

A pause.

“She’s not the person you think.”

The line went dead.

I looked at the address.

Then outside.

The sun was setting.

And I knew.

This was the final chapter.

The final secret.

The final person who had been lying.

I grabbed my jacket.

And went to find Lily’s mother.
