Chapter 5 - Awakening

The first rays of dawn broke over the ocean, casting pale pink and gold light through the high arched windows of the third-floor medical suite.
Clara’s eyelids fluttered.
The heavy fog in her mind was slow to clear. The sound of a steady, rhythmic beep filled her ears. She felt the soft luxury of Egyptian cotton sheets beneath her hands, completely unlike the scratchy wool blanket of her maid’s cot.
She tried to move her hand, but found it restrained by a warm, heavy weight.
Clara opened her eyes fully, wincing against the sunlight.
Sitting in a leather armchair beside the bed, holding her hand firmly in his, was Dante.
His dark hair was uncombed, his shirt wrinkled, dark shadows lying beneath his eyes. He was watching her with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
Memory returned to Clara in a terrifying crash—the bitter taste of her evening tea, the sudden crushing weight in her chest, the floor rising to meet her face, and Lily...
“Lily!” Clara gasped, her voice raspy and dry as she tried to bolt upright.
Dante’s hand pressed gently but firmly against her shoulder, keeping her pinned to the mattress.
“She’s safe,” Dante said softly. “She’s asleep in the next room.”
Clara slumped back against the pillows, tears immediately flooding her eyes. “Dante... oh God, Dante...”
“You lied to me,” Dante said. His voice was quiet, but it carried a weight that made the air in the room feel heavy. “Four years ago, you let me believe you burned in that warehouse in Montreal.”
Clara turned her face away, fresh tears leaking into her hair. “I had to. Callahan was tracking every move you made. He knew about us. He told me if I stayed with you, he would blow up your estate while you were inside. I couldn't let you die for me.”
“So you hid as a maid in my house?” Dante asked, his jaw tightening. “You cleaned my floors for six months?”
“It was the safest place in the world,” Clara whispered, looking back at him with red-rimmed eyes. “Callahan searched every city in North America, but he never thought to look right inside your own house. You were so busy with the waterfront conflict... I just wanted to be near you. I wanted Lily to grow up under the roof of a man who could protect her, even if she never knew your name.”
Dante looked at her for a long, silent moment. Then he reached out, his fingers brushing a tear from her cheek.
“She knew how to find me, Clara,” he murmured.
Clara blinked. “What?”
“At midnight,” Dante said, a faint, rare trace of a smile touching the corner of his lips. “A barefoot three-year-old girl walked into my private wing, knocked on my door, and told me her mommy wouldn't wake up.”

Clara let out a choked, weeping laugh, covering her mouth with her trembling hand. “She... she did that?”
“She saved your life,” Dante said softly. “And she brought my family back to me.”
