Chapter 7 - Pier 14

Rain swept off the Atlantic in freezing, grey sheets, whipping against the rusted corrugated iron of Pier 14.

Four black SUVs sat parked in a semi-circle inside the massive, abandoned shipping warehouse. Standing near the edge of the deep water was Arthur Callahan—a heavy, brutal man in his sixties wearing a dark leather coat, flanked by twenty-four heavily armed men carrying assault rifles.

At precisely four o'clock, a single black armored limousine pulled slowly into the warehouse entrance, its headlights cutting through the foggy gloom.

The driver’s door opened, and Marco stepped out, holding a large black umbrella. He opened the rear door.

Dante Moretti stepped out onto the wet concrete.

He wore his charcoal three-piece suit, custom tailored, completely unbothered by the damp chill in the air. He walked forward alone, his hands tucked loosely into his trousers pockets, stopping ten feet from Callahan’s line of men.

“Moretti!” Callahan bellowed, his voice echoing off the iron rafters. “You brought one car? You must be getting senile in your old age!”

Dante looked at Callahan with quiet indifference. “I didn't need more than one car, Arthur.”

“Give me the girl and the master ledger keys,” Callahan demanded, stepping forward, his hand resting on the grip of a nickel-plated revolver at his waist. “She stole eighty million dollars from my Canadian accounts four years ago. You return her to me, and we keep the peace between Boston and New York.”

Dante tilted his head slightly. “You sent a poisoner into my house. You targeted a child.”

“I do what is necessary to protect my money!” Callahan sneered.

Dante reached into his breast pocket. Callahan’s bodyguards instantly raised their rifles, aiming twenty-four red laser sights directly at Dante’s chest.

Dante didn't even blink. He pulled out his silver cigarette case, extracted a single clove cigarette, lit it with a heavy gold lighter, and took a slow draw.

“You think those men behind you are going to shoot me, Arthur?” Dante asked softly through a cloud of sweet smoke.

Callahan laughed bitterly. “They answer to my payroll!”

Dante blew a ring of smoke into the cold air. “Check their phones.”

Callahan frowned, looking back at his chief lieutenant. “What is he talking about?”

The lieutenant pulled out his satellite device. His face turned completely gray within three seconds. He leaned into Callahan’s ear, his voice trembling.

“Boss... federal marshals just raided our main headquarters in South Boston. Every asset, every house, every boat we own was seized fifteen minutes ago. The wire transfers were executed using our master ledger codes.”

Callahan’s eyes went wide with shock. “What?! How?!”

Dante stepped forward, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the concrete.

“Clara didn't just hide in my house, Arthur,” Dante said smoothly. “She spent six months using my private encrypted network to trace every dollar your family laundered over the last decade. Two hours ago, she transferred your entire family empire to the United States Treasury Department as part of a state immunity deal.”

Callahan stood frozen, his mouth open, his world crumbling beneath his feet in a matter of seconds.

“You’re broke, Arthur,” Dante whispered, stopping three feet away. “And men on your payroll don't stick around when the money stops flowing.”

Behind Callahan, the twenty-four armed men slowly began lowering their rifles. One by one, they turned and walked back toward their vehicles, completely abandoning their boss in the cold warehouse.
