PART 7: THE LAST TRANSFER

PART 7: THE LAST TRANSFER
The river terminal had been abandoned for years.
Old shipping containers stood like empty graves.
The water moved slowly beneath the bridge.
Fog covered the area, making everything look unreal.
Ava sat in the car, staring at the coordinates on the phone.
Every part of her body wanted to run.
Not away.
Toward Noah.
She had spent thirteen months searching for him.
She had fought a hospital.
A system.
A family.
A lie.
But now she was walking into the place where someone powerful enough to steal her child had called her.
Daniel checked his weapon.
Ava looked at him.
“You brought a gun?”
He looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know what we’re walking into.”
She looked out the window.
“Neither do I.”
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“But I know what I’m walking for.”
Daniel understood.
They stepped out of the car.
The cold air hit Ava’s face.
Every sound felt too loud.
A footstep.
A piece of metal moving.
The wind.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“Ava.”
She froze.
It wasn’t Robert.
It was Chloe.
Ava turned.
Chloe Hargrove stepped forward slowly.
Her face was pale.
Her expensive clothes were dirty.
She looked like someone who had finally realized money couldn’t protect her.
“Where is Noah?”
Ava demanded.
Chloe looked at her.
“He’s safe.”
Ava’s anger exploded.
“Safe?”
“You said that before.”
Chloe lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
“You lied.”
“I know.”
“You stole him.”
Chloe closed her eyes.
“I know.”
The same answers.
The same pain.
But this time, Ava saw something different.
Chloe wasn’t defending herself.
She was broken.
“Where is he?”
Chloe pointed toward the largest warehouse.
“He’s inside.”
Ava moved immediately.
But Chloe grabbed her arm.
“Wait.”
Ava pulled away.
“Don’t touch me.”
Chloe accepted it.
“You need to know something.”
“What?”
“Robert doesn’t want Noah.”
Ava frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
“He wants something from Noah.”
Ava stared.
“The inheritance?”
Chloe shook her head.
“No.”
She looked terrified.
“He wants proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Before Chloe could answer…
The lights turned on.
The warehouse doors opened.
And Robert Reed stepped out.
Slowly clapping.
“Still asking questions.”
Ava looked at him.
“You took my son.”
Robert smiled.
“I protected him.”
“From what?”
He looked at her.
“From the world.”
Ava laughed.
“You are the danger.”
For the first time, Robert’s expression changed.
Anger.
“You think you know everything.”
“No.”
Ava stepped forward.
“I know enough.”
“You destroyed my family.”
“You destroyed other mothers.”
“You destroyed children.”
Robert looked at her.
“And yet you still came.”
Ava’s eyes hardened.
“Because I’m his mother.”
Robert smiled slightly.
“That’s exactly why.”
He turned.
A door opened behind him.
And Ava saw Noah.
Her son.
Sitting on a chair.
A man stood beside him.
Noah looked scared.
But he wasn’t crying.
The moment he saw Ava…
His face changed.
“Mama.”
Ava broke.
The word.
The same word.
The same tiny voice.
She took a step forward.
But Robert raised his hand.
“Stop.”
Ava froze.
“Noah.”
The little boy looked at her.
“Mama.”
His voice trembled.
Ava felt tears running down her face.
“I’m here.”
Robert watched.
“You see?”
He looked at Ava.
“That connection.”
Ava stared at him.
“You’re sick.”
Robert ignored the insult.
“That is what makes him valuable.”
“He loves you.”
“He trusts you.”
“And that makes him the perfect key.”
Ava’s face changed.
“What key?”
Robert walked toward a table.
On it was a laptop.
A file.
And a machine.
Ava didn’t understand.
“What is that?”
Robert smiled.
“The reason everything happened.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Robert looked at him.
“You still don’t understand either.”
He opened the file.
“Years ago, my father created a private trust.”
Ava listened.
“A trust protected by DNA verification.”
Daniel frowned.
“So?”
Robert looked at Noah.
“So the money cannot be accessed unless the heir’s genetic code is confirmed.”
Ava understood.
“Noah.”
Robert nodded.
“Exactly.”
Ava looked at her son.
Her anger became something stronger.
Disgust.
“You stole children for money.”
Robert shook his head.
“Not children.”
He corrected.
“Opportunities.”
The word made Ava sick.
“They were babies.”
Robert looked at her.
“They were assets.”
Ava took another step.
“You will never touch him.”
Robert smiled.
“You still think you have a choice.”
Suddenly, the warehouse lights went out.
Darkness.
Ava heard shouting.
A struggle.
Then a crash.
Someone grabbed her hand.
She screamed.
“It’s me!”
Daniel.
He pulled her behind a container.
“Stay down.”
Ava looked around.
“What’s happening?”
“I don’t know.”
Then another voice.
“Everyone stop!”
The lights came back.
And everyone froze.
Margaret stood at the entrance.
But she wasn’t alone.
Behind her were police officers.
Ramirez.
Ava stared.
“How?”
Ramirez looked at her.
“Your mother contacted us.”
Ava looked at Margaret.
Her mother stood there, crying.
“I needed to fix what I broke.”
Robert laughed.
“You always were weak.”
Margaret looked at him.
“No.”
Her voice was stronger than Ava had ever heard.
“I was afraid.”
She stepped forward.
“But I’m not anymore.”
Robert’s face darkened.
“You think this changes anything?”
Ramirez moved closer.
“It does.”
He raised the arrest warrant.
“Robert Reed, you’re under arrest.”
For the first time…
Robert looked uncertain.
Then he smiled.
Because he knew something nobody else knew.
He looked at Ava.
“You’re too late.”
Ava froze.
“What?”
Robert turned toward Noah.
“The transfer already started.”
Everyone looked at the machine.
A red light was blinking.
Daniel rushed forward.
“What did you do?”
Robert smiled.
“Nothing.”
A pause.
“The system did.”
Ava ran toward Noah.
“Mama!”
But before she reached him…
The machine alarm started.
And the screen displayed one sentence.
DNA CONFIRMATION FAILED.
ERROR.
Then another message appeared.
HEIR STATUS UNKNOWN.
Everyone froze.
Robert’s smile disappeared.
Because something had gone wrong.
Something he never expected.
And the reason was standing in front of him.
Noah.
May you like
His own grandson.
Was not the heir.
