PART 8: THE SECRET NOAH CARRIED

PART 8: THE SECRET NOAH CARRIED
The warehouse fell silent.
Not a normal silence.
A silence filled with confusion.
Everyone had expected Robert Reed to be in control.
Everyone had expected his plan to work.
But the machine on the table was flashing one message again and again.
HEIR STATUS UNKNOWN.
Robert stared at the screen.
For the first time since Ava found him…
He looked afraid.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel looked at the machine.
“What did you do?”
Robert ignored him.
He typed quickly.
The screen changed.
ERROR.
ERROR.
ERROR.
Ava stood beside Noah, holding him tightly.
Her son buried his face against her.
She could feel his heartbeat.
Fast.
Scared.
But alive.
Robert looked at her.
“What did you change?”
Ava frowned.
“What?”
“You.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You did something.”
Ava stared at him.
“I don’t even know what you’re talking about.”
Robert pointed at Noah.
“His DNA should have activated the trust.”
“But it didn’t.”
Ava held Noah closer.
“Maybe because he isn’t a thing.”
“He’s a child.”
Robert’s expression became cold.
“You still don’t understand.”
“No.”
Ava looked at him.
“I understand perfectly.”
“You built your whole life around controlling people.”
“You thought money could own everyone.”
“But you forgot one thing.”
Robert waited.
Ava whispered:
“Noah belongs to himself.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then the machine made another sound.
A new message appeared.
IDENTITY VERIFICATION REQUIRED.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What does that mean?”
Robert looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Because he understood.
Someone else had programmed this.
Someone else had added another layer.
Margaret slowly walked toward the table.
Robert looked at her.
“You.”
She stopped.
“What?”
“You changed it.”
Margaret said nothing.
Robert laughed.
A bitter, angry laugh.
“After all these years…”
“You finally tried to stop me.”
Margaret looked at Ava.
“I had to.”
Ava turned.
“What did you do?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“I changed the trust.”
Everyone looked at her.
“When I realized what your father planned…”
“I knew he would never stop.”
She looked at Noah.
“So I made sure the inheritance could never belong to him.”
Ava was confused.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Margaret looked away.
“Because I was afraid.”
The answer hurt.
Again.
Always fear.
“Fear doesn’t excuse everything.”
Margaret nodded.
“I know.”
She accepted it.
“But I wanted to protect you.”
Ava looked at Noah.
“You protected everyone except me.”
Margaret started crying.
“I know.”
The words were painful because they were honest.
Then Robert stepped forward.
“You still don’t know the whole truth.”
Everyone turned.
Robert smiled.
A dangerous smile.
“There is a reason the system rejected Noah.”
Ava immediately became alert.
“What reason?”
Robert looked at the child.
“Because Noah is not the only heir.”
The room went still.
Daniel frowned.
“What are you saying?”
Robert walked toward the file.
“The original trust was not created for one child.”
He opened another document.
“It was created for two.”
Ava felt cold.
“Two?”
Robert nodded.
“Two grandchildren.”
Margaret’s face changed.
She knew.
Ava saw it.
“Mom.”
Margaret looked at her.
“I…”
“Who?”
Margaret couldn’t answer.
Robert did.
“The other child.”
He looked directly at Ava.
“Is your daughter.”
The words hit like a storm.
Ava couldn’t move.
“No.”
Robert smiled.
“Yes.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I only had Noah.”
Robert looked at her.
“Did you?”
Ava’s memories rushed back.
The hospital.
The pain.
The doctors.
The nurses.
The day they told her.
Your baby didn’t survive.
But she remembered something.
Something she had buried.
The doctor saying:
“There was a complication.”
Not baby.
Babies?
No.
Impossible.
She would remember.
She would know.
She was the mother.
“I would know.”
Her voice trembled.
“I would know if I had another child.”
Robert’s expression softened.
Almost cruelly.
“You were unconscious.”
Ava froze.
“No…”
“You never saw the delivery room.”
“You never held either baby.”
“You only saw the paperwork.”
Ava felt dizzy.
Her entire body weakened.
Daniel caught her arm.
“Ava.”
She looked at Margaret.
“Tell me he’s lying.”
Margaret’s face was full of pain.
The silence was an answer.
Ava stepped back.
“No.”
Margaret whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Ava’s eyes filled.
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“Not again.”
Not another secret.
Not another loss.
“What happened?”
Margaret looked down.
“When you gave birth…”
“There were two babies.”
Ava covered her mouth.
“No.”
“A boy and a girl.”
Margaret cried.
“Noah and…”
She stopped.
Ava whispered:
“And who?”
Margaret looked at her.
“Lily.”
The name echoed.
Lily.
The same name Laura Bennett mentioned.
The little girl from the daycare.
The little girl with the scar on her wrist.
Ava remembered.
A missing child.
Another mother.
Another lie.
Her heart shattered.
“That little girl…”
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.”
Ava whispered:
“She’s mine.”
Robert smiled.
“Now you understand.”
The entire world changed again.
Noah wasn’t the only child stolen.
Ava had another baby.
A daughter.
A child she never knew existed.
A child another mother had been searching for.
Daniel immediately took out his phone.
“We need to contact Laura Bennett.”
Ava looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because the girl she saw…”
He paused.
“May be Lily.”
Ava felt tears fall.
Her daughter was alive.
Somewhere.
After all these years.
But then Robert spoke.
“You’re too late.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”
Robert’s smile returned.
“The reason I needed Noah was because Lily disappeared.”
Ava froze.
“What are you saying?”
Robert looked at her.
“The second child was the real target.”
The room became cold.
“Someone else took her.”
Ava’s voice shook.
“Who?”
Robert looked toward the warehouse door.
A figure appeared in the entrance.
A woman.
Everyone turned.
Ava didn’t recognize her.
But the woman smiled.
And said:
“Hello, Ava.”
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I’ve been waiting to meet you.”
Ava stepped back.
“Who are you?”
The woman smiled.
“I’m the reason your daughter was never found.”
Silence.
Then she said:
“And I’m the only person who knows where Lily is.”
Ava’s heart stopped.
Because after thirteen months of searching…
After finding Noah…
May you like
The nightmare was not over.
It had only become bigger.
