Part 2

The door to room 237 remained open.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

The only sound filling the cold hotel room was Maverick’s uneven breathing.

He looked at me like he was desperately trying to find the woman he used to know.

The woman who forgave too easily.

The woman who always believed his explanations.

The woman who loved him so deeply that she once thought anything could be overcome as long as they faced it together.

But that woman was gone.

I was still wearing my wedding dress.

Still wearing my veil.

Still holding the white bouquet in my hands.

But inside me, something had died.

Maverick took a step toward me.

“Amy, please, just listen to me.”

I raised my hand.

A small gesture.

But he stopped immediately.

“Don’t say my name like you still have the right to.”

My voice was calm.

Almost frighteningly calm.

Penelope sat on the bed, pulling the blanket around herself. Her face was pale.

She no longer looked like the confident woman who had stood beside me in front of the mirror earlier that morning and said:

“You’re about to become the happiest woman in the world.”

No.

Now she just looked like someone who had been caught.

Someone who had run out of lies.

“Amy…” she whispered.

I turned toward her.

And one look from me made her fall silent.

“Do you know what hurts the most?”

I asked.

Penelope lowered her eyes.

“It’s not that Maverick betrayed me.”

Maverick frowned.

I continued.

“Men change. Promises get broken. I knew those things were possible.”

I slowly walked into the room.

Placed my wedding bouquet on the small table near the door.

“But I never imagined the person holding my hand today, the person helping me choose my wedding dress, the person wiping my tears when I was scared…”

I looked directly at Penelope.

“…would be the same person waiting for me to walk down the aisle while she stole my husband.”

Penelope’s eyes filled with tears.

“I never meant to—”

“Never meant to what?”

I interrupted.

“Never meant to sleep with him?”

She said nothing.

“Never meant to make him disappear on my wedding day?”

Silence.

“Never meant to leave me standing in front of three hundred guests like a woman who had been abandoned?”

The room became completely still.

Maverick stepped forward.

“Amy, this is more complicated than you think.”

I laughed softly.

A quiet laugh.

But there was no happiness in it.

“Complicated?”

I looked at him.

“You disappeared on our wedding day.”

“You slept with my best friend in a hotel less than ten minutes away from the ceremony.”

“You left me standing there while everyone waited.”

I tilted my head.

“So tell me, what part of this am I misunderstanding?”

Maverick had no answer.

Because for the first time in his life, his charm couldn’t save him.

One hour later, room 237 was no longer quiet.

The door opened again and again.

Maverick’s family arrived one by one.

His parents.

His older brother.

His aunt.

The same people who had raised their glasses to celebrate us only hours earlier.

Now they stood frozen.

Maverick’s mother looked at me.

Then at her son.

Then at Penelope.

She didn’t cry.

She didn’t scream.

She only asked one question.

“Maverick.”

Her voice was cold.

“Is it true?”

Maverick opened his mouth.

“Mom, I—”

“Is it true?”

This time she shouted.

The entire room shook.

Maverick lowered his head.

And in that one second…

Everyone understood.

But what shocked me most wasn’t the betrayal.

It was Penelope’s reaction.

She stood up.

Wrapped a coat around herself.

And said:

“Fine.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Penelope looked directly at me.

The guilt was gone.

The fear was gone.

Only bitterness remained.

“I think you should know the truth.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“The truth?”

She nodded.

“Maverick never planned to marry you.”

The entire room froze.

I looked at Maverick.

His face turned pale.

“Penelope, stop.”

But she laughed.

A bitter, broken laugh.

“No. You promised me.”

My heartbeat slowed.

“Promised you what?”

Penelope looked at me.

“That after the wedding, you would sign all the documents.”

I stared at her.

“What documents?”

No one answered.

Until Maverick’s father stepped forward.

He looked at his son like he was seeing a stranger.

“Maverick…”

His voice was low.

“You told your mother that she would transfer the assets before the divorce.”

My blood ran cold.

“Assets?”

Maverick immediately panicked.

“That’s not what you think.”

I looked at him.

And for the first time…

I truly didn’t recognize the man standing in front of me.

“Then tell me what I should think.”

Silence.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

From my father’s assistant.

Amy, we checked. There’s a problem.

I opened the attachment.

The file name appeared:

MAVERICK BLACK — COMPLETE REPORT

I tapped it.

The first page loaded.

And within seconds…

I understood.

This was never just an affair.

This was a plan.

A plan that had started long before tonight.

And I was the last person to realize I had been the target all along.

I lifted my head.

I looked at Maverick.

“You want to know what’s funny?”

He stared at me.

I smiled.

“You thought you destroyed my wedding day.”

I raised my phone.

“But you just gave me a reason to destroy your entire life.”

May you like

And for the first time…

Maverick was afraid.
