Part 4

The door opened.

And everything changed.

Five people stepped into the hotel suite.

Three lawyers.

Two investigators.

All dressed in dark suits, carrying folders and tablets.

They didn’t look angry.

They didn’t need to.

People who already know they have won never need to raise their voices.

Maverick stared at them.

Then at me.

Then back at them.

His face lost every trace of confidence.

“Amy…”

His voice was quieter now.

Almost pleading.

“What did you do?”

I looked at him.

The same man who had promised to protect me.

The same man who had kissed my forehead that morning and told me he couldn’t wait to call me his wife.

Now he stood in front of me like a stranger.

“I did exactly what you taught me.”

His eyebrows tightened.

“What?”

I walked slowly toward the table.

“You planned everything.”

I placed my phone down.

“You studied me.”

I placed the report beside it.

“You searched for my weaknesses.”

Then I looked directly into his eyes.

“So I studied you.”

Maverick swallowed.

His father stared at him in disbelief.

“What did you do, son?”

No answer.

That was the first time I saw fear on Maverick’s face.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

One of the lawyers stepped forward.

“Mr. Black, my name is Jonathan Reed. I represent the Carter family.”

Maverick laughed nervously.

“The Carter family?”

He looked at me.

“She’s not—”

The lawyer interrupted.

“Mrs. Carter has authorized us to begin immediate legal action regarding fraud, financial manipulation, and attempted asset transfer.”

The room went completely silent.

Penelope’s face changed.

“What?”

She looked at Maverick.

“You told me everything was safe.”

Maverick ignored her.

His eyes remained on me.

“This is insane.”

I tilted my head.

“Is it?”

The lawyer opened a folder.

“Would you like me to continue?”

Maverick didn’t answer.

So he did.

“Three months ago, Mr. Black created several shell companies.”

He placed documents on the table.

“These companies received money from investors under false statements.”

Maverick’s father picked up one page.

His hands began shaking.

“I don’t believe this.”

The lawyer continued.

“Those funds were later transferred into accounts connected to Monica Reed and Brittany Holdings.”

Penelope looked confused.

“Who is Monica?”

I looked at her.

“You don’t even know everyone involved?”

Her face went pale.

Maverick turned sharply.

“Enough.”

For the first time, his voice sounded desperate.

Not powerful.

Not arrogant.

Desperate.

“Amy, we can fix this.”

I almost laughed.

“Fix it?”

“Yes.”

He stepped toward me.

“Please.”

The word sounded strange coming from him.

Maverick Black.

The man who thought he controlled everything.

Now begging.

“I made mistakes.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

My voice was cold.

“You made choices.”

His expression fell.

“There’s a difference.”

The room remained silent.

Because everyone knew I was right.

A mistake is something you regret.

A choice is something you repeat.

And Maverick had been choosing this for months.

Maybe years.

Penelope suddenly stepped forward.

“This isn’t my fault.”

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t know about the money.”

Maverick stared at her.

“What are you doing?”

She pointed at him.

“You told me she would sign everything!”

His jaw tightened.

“Penelope.”

“No.”

She backed away.

“I covered for you. I lied for you. I destroyed my friendship for you.”

Her voice cracked.

“And now you’re going to let me take the blame?”

I watched them.

And strangely…

I felt nothing.

The betrayal still hurt.

But the pain had changed.

It was no longer a wound.

It was proof.

Proof that I had finally seen the truth.

Maverick looked at Penelope with disgust.

“You think anyone will believe you?”

Her face froze.

That was when she realized something.

He never loved her either.

She was just another piece on his board.

“Wow,” I whispered.

Maverick looked at me.

“What?”

I shook my head.

“You really don’t know how to love anyone, do you?”

For a moment, he looked almost hurt.

Almost human.

Then it disappeared.

The lawyer handed me another document.

“Mrs. Carter, there is one more thing.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He hesitated.

“This concerns the marriage.”

My stomach tightened.

The room became quiet again.

“What about it?”

He opened the file.

“Mr. Black had already prepared divorce documents before the wedding.”

Everyone froze.

Even Maverick’s parents.

His mother whispered:

“No…”

The lawyer continued.

“He intended to have Mrs. Carter sign them after transferring ownership of the property.”

I looked at Maverick.

My husband.

At least legally.

For a few more hours.

“You planned to divorce me immediately after taking everything.”

He didn’t answer.

Because there was nothing left to say.

I slowly removed my wedding ring.

The room watched.

The symbol that had meant forever that morning.

The symbol he had used as part of his plan.

I placed it on the table.

Next to the evidence.

“Take it.”

Maverick stared.

“What?”

“I don’t want it.”

His face twisted.

“Amy…”

I looked at him.

“You wanted my money.”

I stepped back.

“You wanted my name.”

Another step.

“You wanted my life.”

I opened the door.

“But you forgot one thing.”

He looked up.

“What?”

I smiled.

“I built a life before you entered it.”

The lawyers moved toward the table.

The investigators began collecting evidence.

And for the first time that night…

Maverick Black had nothing left to control.

As I walked out of room 237, I heard his mother crying behind me.

I heard Penelope arguing.

I heard the sound of a man losing everything.

But I didn’t turn around.

Because the woman who walked into that hotel room in a wedding dress…

was not the same woman who walked out.

I arrived expecting heartbreak.

I left with the truth.

May you like

And by morning…

the entire world would know exactly who Maverick Black really was.
