Chapter 10 - The Sun over the Harbor

Five years later.

The summer sun was warm and golden over the historic harbor of Portland, Maine.

A massive, sleek white cargo vessel—the S.S. Aurelia Vance—sat majestic at the dock, its grand hull gleaming in the bright sunlight. It was the flagship of the Vance Maritime green fleet, a marvel of modern, zero-emission marine technology.

A massive crowd had gathered along the wooden pier for the vessel's maiden voyage ceremony.

Lucia Vance stood near the ship's bow, wearing a stunning white linen dress, her hand resting affectionately on the shoulder of her eight-year-old daughter, Aurelia.

Aurelia was a bright, beautiful young girl, tall for her age, with striking dark eyes, a brilliant smile, and an infectious, adventurous spirit. She held a bottle of ceremonial champagne wrapped in gold ribbon.

"Are you ready, my sweet girl?" Lucia asked softly, leaning down to her daughter's ear.

"I'm ready, Mommy!" Aurelia replied excitedly, her voice full of joy. "Do I swing it hard?"

"As hard as you can," Arthur Vance smiled, standing on Aurelia’s other side, leaning proudly on his silver cane.

Aurelia took a deep breath, swung the champagne bottle with all her strength, and shattered it against the steel bow of the giant ship.

CRASH!

The crowd burst into loud cheers and applause as the ship's massive foghorn let out a long, deep, triumphant roar that echoed across the vast blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

White doves were released into the sky, soaring high above the sparkling water.

Lucia stepped back, pulling her daughter close against her side, looking out over the endless blue horizon.

She remembered where she had been eight years ago.

She remembered the cold steel of a hospital tray.

She remembered the sound of a gold wedding ring rolling across stainless steel.

She remembered the terrifying darkness of a night when a husband had abandoned his dying wife and unborn child for twenty minutes of corporate greed.

Dante Moretti had thought he was leaving behind a weak, bleeding woman in a hospital room.

He had failed to realize that by walking away, he had unleashed the fiercest, most indestructible force in the world—a mother fighting for her child.

Out of the blood on that trauma table, Lucia had built a sanctuary. Out of the betrayal, she had forged an empire. Out of the darkness, she had brought forth a brilliant, golden light named Aurelia.

Aurelia looked up at her mother, wrapping her arm tightly around Lucia’s waist.

"Mommy?" Aurelia asked softly.

"Yes, my love?"

"Are we happy?"

Lucia looked down at her daughter, feeling the warm summer sun on her face, hearing the joyful cheers of the crowd, smelling the clean, salty breeze of the open sea.

A slow, radiant, breathtaking smile spread across Lucia Vance’s face.

"We are free, my darling," Lucia whispered, kissing her daughter’s forehead. "And that is so much better than happy."

Together, mother and daughter stood on the sunny dock, holding hands, watching their grand ship sail smoothly out into the vast, beautiful, boundless horizon.
