Chapter 5 - The Mother's Fury

At 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the sun rose over a freezing, fog-draped Chicago.

Dante had spent four hours sitting in his car outside the hospital perimeter, watched closely by city police officers whom Gerald Whitmore had personally posted to ensure Dante respected the temporary restraining order.

Defeated, exhausted, and desperate, Dante returned to the family estate in Lake Forest.

The grand wrought-iron gates opened, and Dante pulled his sedan up the long, winding driveway.

As he stepped through the front entrance of the mansion, he was met not by quiet comfort, but by the furious presence of his mother, Claudia Moretti.

Claudia was sixty-two, a matriarch of the old school who had raised Dante after his father's violent death twenty years ago. She was a woman who valued family honor, lineage, and respect above all else.

She stood in the grand foyer, holding a stack of morning newspapers.

On the front cover of the Chicago Tribune was a massive headline: MORETTI LOGISTICS COLLAPSES AS VANCE FAMILY FILES EMERGENCY DIVORCE AND FRAUD SUIT.

Claudia threw the newspaper directly into Dante's face.

"You idiot!" Claudia screamed, her voice echoing off the high marble ceilings. "You absolute, arrogant idiot!"

Dante flinched as the paper struck his chest and fluttered to the floor. "Mother, please... I’ve been up all night—"

SLAP!

Claudia stepped forward and delivered a stinging slap directly across Dante’s right cheek. The force of the blow snapped his head sideways.

"How dare you!" Claudia wept, her eyes blazing with profound rage and shame. "How dare you drag the Moretti name into the gutter!"

"Mother, Vivian called me with crucial information about the offshore accounts—"

"I don't give a damn about Vivian Ross or your offshore accounts!" Claudia roared, clutching her rosary beads in her trembling hand. "Lucia was carrying your child! She was bleeding in a trauma bay! My granddaughter... my flesh and blood... was dying!"

"I thought the doctors had it under control!" Dante pleaded, grabbing his mother's shoulders. "I thought I had twenty minutes!"

"You thought?" Claudia sobbed, striking his chest with her fists. "You don't think with your heart, Dante! You think with your arrogance! You left your pregnant wife for that viper Vivian! Do you have any idea what Lucia meant to this family? She gave us respectability! She gave us protection! She was the best thing that ever happened to you!"

"I am going to get them back!" Dante insisted desperately, tears streaming down his face. "I am going to fix this, Mother! I'll destroy Vivian, I'll pay back the Vance family, I'll do whatever it takes!"

"Fix it?" Claudia laughed bitterly, backing away from him, looking at her son as if he were a complete stranger. "You can't fix this, Dante. Gerald Whitmore has spent the morning seizing our joint assets. Our family accounts are frozen. Your lieutenants are already abandoning you because they know Arthur Vance is coming to crush us. You didn't just lose your wife today, Dante... you destroyed your empire."

Claudia turned toward the grand staircase, stopping on the first step to look back down at her broken son.

"And worst of all," Claudia whispered coldly, "if Lucia never forgives you... I will never forgive you either."

Claudia walked up the stairs, leaving Dante standing completely alone in the silent, empty foyer of his vast estate.
