Chapter 6 - The Recovery of Lucia Vance

Five days later.

In a sunlit, high-security private suite on the ninth floor of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Lucia sat in a comfortable armchair near the window.

She wore a soft cashmere sweater and sweatpants. Her face was still thin and pale from the blood loss, but her dark eyes had regained their sharp, luminous vitality.

Beside her sat a state-of-the-art clear medical isolette.

Inside the heated isolette lay her newborn daughter, wrapped in a pink blanket, tiny monitors attached to her chest. She weighed barely three and a half pounds, but her breathing was steady, her heart rate strong, and she was gaining weight every single day.

Lucia reached her hand through the soft silicone port of the isolette, gently cradling her daughter's tiny, perfect hand with her pinky finger.

"She has your eyes, my dear," Arthur Vance said softly, stepping into the room carrying a vase of fresh white peonies.

Lucia looked up, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips. "She has your stubbornness, Dad. The nurses say she fights every time they try to adjust her feeding tube."

Arthur chuckled quietly, setting the flowers on the side table and kissing his daughter gently on the forehead. "Good. She's a Vance. She'll need that strength."

Gerald Whitmore stepped into the room behind Arthur, carrying his signature leather briefcase.

"Good morning, Lucia," Gerald said warmly. "How are you feeling today?"

"Better, Gerald," Lucia replied, her voice smooth and grounded. "Tell me about the court filings."

Gerald opened his briefcase, pulling out a thick folder of legal documents.

"The temporary restraining order against Dante and the Moretti security team has been made permanent by the judge," Gerald reported crisp. "Dante cannot come within five hundred yards of you, the baby, or this hospital. He has been ordered to surrender his passport due to ongoing financial fraud investigations initiated by federal regulators."

Lucia nodded quietly. "And Moretti Logistics?"

"In absolute freefall," Gerald said with a cold smile. "Without the Vance port guarantees, three of their major international shipping partners canceled their contracts yesterday. Their stock value has plummeted by seventy-four percent. The board of directors is holding an emergency meeting this afternoon to vote on removing Dante as CEO."

Lucia looked down at her daughter sleeping peacefully in the incubator.

"What about Vivian Ross?" Lucia asked softly.

"Ms. Ross was formally arrested two hours ago by the FBI," Gerald revealed. "Charged with wire fraud, corporate espionage, and illegal money laundering linked to her father's offshore accounts. Dante tried to throw her under the bus to save himself, but she’s currently singing like a bird to prosecutors, implicating Dante in every illegal transaction made over the last eighteen months."

Lucia didn't feel joy at the news. She didn't feel vengeance. She felt only a quiet, profound sense of liberation.

The dark world of Dante Moretti, built on pride, fear, and ruthless ambition, was burning itself to the ground.

"Lucia," Gerald said softly, presenting a final document. "This is the official petition to change your daughter's legal name. As per your request, she will not bear the Moretti name."

Lucia took the pen from Gerald's hand.

She looked at her daughter’s tiny face, feeling an overwhelming wave of fierce, motherly love wash through her heart.

She pressed the pen to the paper and signed the legal name clearly:

Aurelia Eleanor Vance.

"Aurelia," Arthur repeated softly, tears glistening in his silver eyes. "It means golden one."

"She survived the storm," Lucia whispered, looking out the sunlit window at the Chicago skyline far below. "She belongs to the light now."
