Chapter 4 - The War Room

The morning sun broke through the grey clouds, bathing the penthouse in sharp, golden light.

Mireia stood in the center of Darius’s private study, dressed in a sharp black silk blouse and tailored trousers provided by his private stylist. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional ponytail, highlighting her high cheekbones and striking violet eyes.

Across the broad marble desk sat three men: Darius Villano, his head of security, Marco—a broad-shouldered man with a scarred jaw—and Arthur Vance, Darius’s senior legal counsel.

On the digital display wall behind them was a complex network of corporate structures, financial trusts, and family trees.

“The Dalton Logistics merger is officially dead as of eight o’clock this morning,” Arthur reported, tapping his tablet. “When Richard Dalton realized Mireia hadn't returned home, he attempted to secure an emergency bridge loan through Vance Financial. But Caleb Vance’s father froze their accounts after the public disaster at the dinner table last night.”

Mireia leaned against the leather armchair, sipping black coffee. “My father’s company is over-leveraged by twelve million dollars. Without the Vance merger or Darius’s funding, he will default on his port leases within thirty days.”

Darius looked at her with an approving half-smile. “You know your father’s books?”

“I managed his accounting department for three years,” Mireia said coolly. “He thought he was keeping me busy with administrative work. In reality, I was the one keeping his company from going bankrupt while he spent two hundred thousand dollars a year on Alyssa’s art gallery in Soho.”

Marco let out a low whistle. “The lady knows where the bodies are buried.”

“I built that company’s financial infrastructure,” Mireia said, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. “I know every hidden shell company, every inflated inventory report, and every illegal tax shelter my father used to funnel my mother’s trust money.”

Darius leaned forward, resting his elbows on the marble desk, his hands folded beneath his chin.

“Then we strike them through their greed,” Darius said. “Arthur, file an emergency injunction in the federal court claiming fraudulent conversion of the Moretti estate assets against Richard Dalton. Seize all Dalton Logistics accounts, freeze their fleet, and serve him with a subpoena by noon.”

“And Caleb?” Mireia asked, her eyes narrowing.

Darius’s gaze softened slightly as he looked at her. “Caleb Vance thinks he can fix his reputation by crawling back to your sister. My intelligence team reported that he showed up at Alyssa’s apartment at seven this morning with flowers.”

Mireia felt a brief, bitter sting in her chest, but it was quickly replaced by a wave of cold disgust. “Did she let him in?”

“She threw the flowers in the trash and called the building security to escort him off the premises,” Marco supplied with a grin. “Your sister might be spoiled, Miss Dalton, but she’s not stupid.”

Mireia let out a slow breath. Good. Alyssa had her flaws, but she wasn't a traitor. Caleb Vance was simply a pathetic, desperate man scrambling for whatever pride he had left.

“Caleb Vance’s firm relies heavily on municipal bonds controlled by the city council,” Darius said, standing up from his chair and walking over to stand beside Mireia. “I am calling an emergency meeting of the Commerce Commission tonight at the Grand Hotel. I want Caleb Vance and Richard Dalton in that room when I announce the acquisition of the Moretti estate.”

He turned to Mireia, holding out his arm.

“You will enter that ballroom on my arm, Mireia,” Darius said softly. “You will wear the Moretti seal. And you will watch them realize that the woman they trampled on is now the person who holds their lives in her hands.”

Mireia looked at his offered arm. The power, the protection, and the sheer force of the man beside her were overwhelming. But beneath his cold, ruthless exterior, Darius Villano had treated her with more respect in twelve hours than Caleb Vance had in six years.

She placed her hand on his forearm, feeling the dense muscle beneath the expensive wool of his coat.

“Let’s go ruin them,” Mireia said.
