Chapter 5 - The Grand Ballroom

The Grand Hotel’s conservatory ballroom was the center of power for the city’s elite. Crystal chandeliers hung from painted ceilings, polished marble floors reflected the sparkling attire of politicians, CEOs, and syndicate bosses, and classical violin music floated through the air.

At eight o'clock, Richard Dalton stood near the bar, holding a tumbler of bourbon, his face red and sweating. Beside him stood Caleb Vance, looking pale, his eyes darting nervously around the room.

“Where the hell is she, Richard?” Caleb hissed under his breath. “The press is asking why the engagement party ended in an ambulance call last night! If Mireia doesn't release a statement saying it was a private family misunderstanding, my father’s board is going to strip my voting rights!”

“She’s not answering her phone!” Richard growled. “She’s probably hiding at some cheap hotel trying to make us feel guilty. When she comes back, I’m going to force her to sign the merger papers whether she likes it or not!”

Suddenly, the classical music seemed to stutter.

The heavy gilded doors at the front of the ballroom swung open. Two tall, dark-suited security guards stepped through, clearing a path through the crowd.

A collective hush swept through the room, starting from the entrance and spreading like wildfire across the two hundred guests.

Stepping into the ballroom was Darius Villano.

He was dressed in a tailored black tuxedo with a velvet lapel, looking every inch the king of the city’s underworld. But it wasn't Darius that caused two hundred people to gasp in unison.

It was the woman on his arm.

Mireia Dalton looked breathtaking. She wore a floor-length dress of deep crimson silk that cut dramatically across her collarbone, hugging her curves before spilling into a sleek train behind her. Her dark hair was styled in old-Hollywood waves, her lips painted a fierce, blood-red shade. Around her throat sat a collar of black diamonds, and on her right index finger, the silver Moretti signet ring gleamed brightly under the chandelier lights.

She walked with her head held high, her spine straight, radiating an aura of absolute power and calm supremacy.

Caleb Vance dropped his glass of bourbon. It shattered against the marble floor, amber liquid splashing across his leather shoes.

“Mireia...?” Caleb breathed, his voice cracking with shock.

Richard Dalton’s eyes bulged. “What the hell is she doing with Villano?!”

Darius led Mireia smoothly through the parting crowd, ignoring the whispering guests, the flashing cameras, and the stunned expressions of the city’s elite. He walked straight toward the center stage where the Commerce Commission members were standing.

Darius took the microphone from the podium, his low, powerful voice echoing clearly through the speaker system.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” Darius said smoothly, his arm firmly wrapped around Mireia’s waist. “Tonight was supposed to be a standard commercial gathering. But I have an announcement that concerns the future of this city’s financial and industrial maritime sector.”

He stepped aside, gesturing toward Mireia.

“As of six o’clock this evening, the United States Federal Court has formally recognized Mireia Dalton as the sole surviving blood heir to the Estate of Vincente Moretti.”

A loud, shock-filled gasp rippled through the room. Senior syndicate bosses sitting in the private VIP booths leaned over the balconies, their faces turning pale as their eyes locked onto the silver ring on Mireia’s finger.

“Furthermore,” Darius continued, his voice dropping into a lethal, authoritative register, “Miss Moretti has formally transferred the management of the Moretti Port Authority assets to the Villano Group. In addition, an immediate freeze has been placed on all assets operated by Dalton Logistics due to thirty years of systemic financial fraud.”

Richard Dalton stumbled forward, his face purple with rage. “This is a lie! That girl is my daughter! She doesn't own anything!”

Two of Darius’s security guards stepped in front of Richard, blocking him instantly, their hands resting inside their jackets.

Mireia stepped forward to the microphone. She looked directly at her father, then shifted her gaze to Caleb Vance, who looked like he was about to vomit.

“You spent six years telling me I was nothing without you, Caleb,” Mireia said, her voice carrying through the silent ballroom like a velvet hammer. “And you spent thirty years using my mother’s memory to enrich yourself, Father. Tonight, the debt is collected.”

She raised her right hand, letting the silver Moretti ring catch the light of the crystal chandeliers.

“Dalton Logistics is bankrupt. Vance Financial is under federal investigation. And if either of you ever step within fifty feet of my family again, Darius Villano will ensure you answer to the Moretti code.”

The room was dead silent.

Caleb Vance collapsed onto his knees near the shattered glass, his face buried in his hands, completely ruined before the entire city. Richard Dalton was dragged out of the ballroom by federal marshals who had just entered through the side doors holding arrest warrants.

Darius turned to Mireia, offering his hand once again.

“Shall we dance, Miss Moretti?” he asked softly, a genuine, rare smile gracing his handsome face.

Mireia looked at her ruined ex-fiancé, looked at her father being led away in handcuffs, and then looked into the dark, fierce eyes of the man who had given her her life back.

She placed her hand in his.

“I thought you’d never ask, Mr. Villano.”
