Chapter 10 - The Queen of the Estate

The grand orchestra began playing a sweeping waltz as Enzo and I glided down the winding marble staircase together. Two hundred guests parted instantly, bowing their heads in respect and clapping softly as we stepped onto the main floor.

There were no toxic whispers tonight. No hidden daggers. No contemptuous glares from women like Camila Ashford.

Every prominent family in the city knew that standing beside Enzo Marquetti was a woman who had proven her loyalty, her intelligence, and her courage under fire.

As we reached the center of the dance floor, Enzo took my right hand in his, placing his left hand gently against the small of my back. We began to move in fluid, perfect harmony to the rhythm of the violins.

“You’ve been practicing your steps,” Enzo murmured into my ear as he spun me gracefully under his arm.

“I had a very demanding instructor,” I whispered back, laughing softly as he brought me back into his chest. “He threatened to fire me if I stepped on his Italian shoes.”

“I don't fire people I can't replace,” Enzo said, his tone softening as his gray eyes searched mine.

As the waltz reached its crescendo, I looked across the room.

Julian stood near the main entrance, looking sharp in his dark suit, his physical recovery complete. He gave me a crisp, respectful nod and a brief smile. Beside him, Mrs. Rosaria raised her champagne glass in a silent toast, her eyes shining with joy.

My mind briefly flashed back to eight months ago—to the quiet, fearful girl who had walked through the service gates of this massive estate with a single worn suitcase, terrified of the future, grieving her mother, and searching for a way to survive.

I had thought this mansion was a golden cage filled with dangerous monsters.

And it was. But I had learned that monsters could be tamed, cages could be dismantled, and strength wasn't born from money or titles—it was forged in the fire of choices made when everything was on the line.

The music slowed to a gentle halt, and the final notes of the violin echoed through the vaulted ceiling.

The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous applause.

Enzo bowed slightly, keeping his hand wrapped securely around mine. He leaned down, his lips brushing against my temple.

“You belong here, Adeline,” Enzo whispered, his voice steady, proud, and filled with an undeniable promise. “Not as a housemaid. Not as a secret. But as the mistress of this house. As my equal.”

I looked out at the sea of powerful faces, then back at the man who had torn down an empire to protect me.

I smiled, my heart light, whole, and completely fearless.

“I know,” I replied softly, squeezing his hand tightly. “And I’m not going anywhere.”

Together, hand in hand, we turned to face the world—no longer living in the shadows, but ruling the light.
