Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

The morning light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the guest suite, illuminating the opulent mahogany furniture and gold-leaf accents. My body burned with a dull, throbbed ache, every movement reminding me of Camila’s leather whip. But physical pain was easier to handle than the overwhelming anxiety twisting my stomach.

A knock sounded at the door before it creaked open.

Mrs. Rosaria Marquetti walked in, supported by a polished silver cane. She looked frail, her pale silk robe hanging loosely off her thin frame, but her dark eyes were filled with sharp intelligence and deep sorrow. Behind her walked two young maids carrying silver trays filled with fresh fruit, poached eggs, and warm tea.

“Leave us,” Rosaria commanded the maids gently.

The girls bowed instantly and scampered out, shutting the door.

Rosaria sat heavily on the plush armchair beside my bed. She reached out with her trembling, spot-covered hand and cupped my unharmed cheek.

“Oh, my poor child,” Rosaria whispered, tears welling in her tired eyes. “Look at what they did to you. Look at what my foolishness caused.”

“Mrs. Rosaria, please don't cry,” I said softly, sitting up despite the burning sensation in my back. “It wasn't your fault. I am fine, truly.”

“You are not fine, Adeline! You stood between me and that snake Camila,” Rosaria said, her voice shaking with anger. “I knew she was arrogant, but I never imagined she possessed such cruelty. To strike a defenseless girl with a crop...”

“Enzo stopped her,” I reminded her softly.

Rosaria let out a bitter laugh. “Enzo acts when it suits his strategic interests. My son is a brilliant man, Adeline, but he has built a heart out of stone to survive in this world. Ever since his father died ten years ago, Enzo views every person as either a tool or an obstacle.”

She squeezed my hand tightly.

“He confronted me last night,” Rosaria confessed, looking down at her lap. “He knows about my illness. He knows I hid it from him. He was furious, Adeline. Not because he was heartbroken, but because he hated that a variable existed outside his control.”

“He is trying to protect you, Mrs. Rosaria,” I said, though I recalled his cold admission that he had used her as bait.

“Perhaps,” Rosaria sighed. “But now Camila and her father are pushing him into a corner. Have you seen the morning news?”

I shook my head.

Rosaria reached into her robe pocket and pulled out a sleek tablet, sliding it toward me on the white duvet.

The headliners were blinding:

"SCANDAL AT THE MARQUETTI GALA: DERANGED MAID ATTACKS FUTURE BRIDE CAMILA ASHFORD!" "ASHFORD LOGISTICS DEMANDS ARREST OF ADELINE CROFT AS MARQUETTI STOCK PLUMMETS 8%."

Below the articles were leaked photos from the ballroom. They showed Camila standing with her ruined white dress, looking tearful and distressed, while another photo showed Enzo carrying me away in his arms. The media was spinning a toxic narrative: a low-class housemaid had become obsessed with the wealthy patriarch, attacked his bride out of jealousy, and was now being protected in the estate like a dirty secret.

“They are calling for your arrest, Adeline,” Rosaria said solemnly. “The Ashford family controls three major news networks. They are turning the public against us to force Enzo into giving them a bigger stake in the shipping alliance as compensation.”

“I can turn myself in,” I blurted out, panic clutching my throat. “I can tell the police that Camila hit me first! Look at my back, Mrs. Rosaria! The marks prove she assaulted me!”

“In the real world, my dear, marks on a housemaid’s back do not matter against the word of a billionaire’s daughter,” a deep, commanding voice interrupted from the doorway.

Enzo stood there. He was impeccably dressed in a dark charcoal three-piece suit, his dark hair slicked back, looking every bit the ruthless titan of industry. He carried a leather document folder under his arm.

“Enzo,” Rosaria said sharply, turning to her son. “What are you doing about this? You cannot let them drag this innocent girl to jail!”

“I am not letting anyone drag her anywhere,” Enzo said smoothly, stepping into the room. He motioned for his mother to remain calm. “Mother, please leave us. I need to brief Adeline on our strategy.”

Rosaria stood up slowly, tapping her cane against the floor. “If you treat her like a pawn in your game, Enzo, I will never forgive you.”

“I am saving her life, Mother,” Enzo replied coldly. “Now please.”

With a worried look back at me, Rosaria reluctantly exited the room.

Enzo walked over to the bed and tossed the leather folder onto the mattress beside me. I opened it to reveal pages of complex legal documents, financial disclosures, and a non-disclosure agreement.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Your defense,” Enzo said, leaning against the bedpost. “Camila’s father gave me an ultimatum an hour ago. Either I hand you over to the district attorney by noon, or he breaks the merger and launches a hostile takeover of our logistics division.”

“So you are handing me over?” My voice faltered.

Enzo chuckled darkly. “Do I look like a man who takes orders from Arthur Ashford?”

He leaned down, placing both hands on the mattress, pinning me with his intense gray eyes.

“I am hosting a live press conference at two o'clock this afternoon in the central courtyard,” Enzo declared. “You will sit beside me.”

“Beside you?” I gasped. “Mr. Marquetti, I am a maid! I don't know how to speak to reporters! They will tear me apart!”

“You won't have to say much,” Enzo said, his tone dropping an octave. “You will wear a dress that covers your wounds, but leaves your neck visible. You will look calm, elegant, and untamed. And when the press asks why I carried you out of the room, I will give them the truth.”

“The truth?” I asked nervously. “About your mother’s illness?”

“No,” Enzo smiled—a dangerous, sharp smile that made my heart leap into my throat. “My mother’s health remains private. The truth I will tell them is that Camila Ashford attempted to poison a guest, and you heroically intervened.”

My eyes widened. “Poison? But... it was just wine!”

“Pinot Noir containing a concentrated dose of digitalis extract,” Enzo corrected smoothly, pulling a small lab report from his pocket and laying it over the legal papers. “My security team analyzed the broken glass on the floor last night. Camila didn't just want my mother incapacitated, Adeline. She was trying to trigger a fatal cardiac arrest.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine. Camila hadn't just been careless—she was a murderer in high heels.

“Camila played a dangerous game,” Enzo whispered, his eyes gleaming with lethal intelligence. “She thought she could intimidate a quiet maid and force my hand. She doesn't realize that by striking you, she gave me the exact weapon I needed to destroy her family forever.”

He reached out, his thumb gently pressing against the side of my jaw, making me hold his gaze.

“You aren't just my housemaid anymore, Adeline,” Enzo whispered. “Starting today, you are my key witness. And you belong entirely to me.”
