Chapter 9 - The New Era

Three months later.

The grand ballroom of the Marquetti estate was once again filled with the hum of high-society conversation, glowing chandeliers, and the gentle clinking of crystal champagne flutes. The damage from the gala three months ago had been completely erased, restored to an even grander magnificence.

Tonight marked the annual Marquetti Charity Foundation Gala—the very event that had almost claimed my life.

Exquisite flower arrangements lined the white marble pillars, and dozens of high-profile diplomats, corporate leaders, and media moguls moved through the hall. But the atmosphere was entirely different.

The Ashford scandal had concluded with full convictions. Vanguard Global’s local network had been dismantled by federal authorities following a tip-off from Enzo’s security team. The Marquetti family stood undisputed at the pinnacle of international commerce.

I stood on the mezzanine balcony overlooking the grand ballroom, wearing a stunning floor-length midnight-blue gown studded with subtle diamonds that shimmered like stars under the chandelier lights. A delicate sapphire necklace—a gift from Rosaria—rested against my collarbone.

“Thinking about the last time you were standing up here?” a deep voice murmured behind me.

I turned to see Enzo stepping onto the balcony. He looked devastatingly handsome in a perfectly tailored tuxedo, a red rose pinned to his lapel.

“I was thinking about how much I hated polishing those brass railings down there,” I smiled, looking over at the grand staircase.

Enzo let out a soft laugh, stepping up beside me and resting his arms on the stone balustrade. “You were terrible at polishing railings anyway. Mrs. Gable told me you spent more time reading books in the library than dusting the shelves.”

“Mrs. Gable was a harsh taskmaster,” I teased, nudging his shoulder with mine.

Enzo’s tone turned gentle as he turned to look at me. “How is my mother doing tonight?”

“She’s wonderful,” I replied, looking down toward the main floor where Rosaria was currently laughing with a group of elderly ambassadors, looking healthier and happier than she had in years. Her new medical treatment plan was working miracles. “She insisted on dancing the opening waltz later.”

“She only agreed to attend tonight because you promised to host it with me,” Enzo noted, a warm smile touching his lips.

It was true. Over the last three months, my life had transformed completely. I wasn't just living at the estate; Enzo had brought me into the management of the family’s philanthropic foundation. I had spent the last ninety days directing millions of dollars toward healthcare initiatives, orphanages, and worker protection programs—using the Marquetti wealth to rebuild lives rather than destroy them.

The society press no longer referred to me as "the disgraced housemaid." The media now called me "The Emerald Representative"—the sharp, compassionate partner of the most powerful man in the country.

“They’re waiting for us downstairs, Mr. Marquetti,” I said, stepping closer to him and adjusting his silk bow tie.

Enzo wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me tightly against his chest, ignoring the dozens of guests below who were glancing up at the balcony.

“Let them wait,” Enzo whispered, his dark eyes locking onto mine with intoxicating warmth. “I spent ten years running this family alone, Adeline. I’m not rushing through the best part of my life.”

He leaned down and kissed me deeply, a sweet, unhurried kiss that made my heart race just as fast as it had on the night he saved me.

Down in the ballroom, subtle applause broke out from the guests who noticed us on the balcony.

Enzo pulled back slowly, a rare, breathtaking smile lighting up his dark features. He extended his arm to me.

“Shall we make our entrance, Miss Croft?”

May you like

I placed my hand firmly over his forearm, holding my head high.

“Lead the way, Enzo.”
