Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the True Authority

The man stepping through the doorway was Charles Sterling—Daniel’s estranged uncle and the legal primary trustee of the entire Sterling Global Estate.

Beside Charles stood Prosecutor Raymond Vance, a man known throughout the state as an unyielding, incorruptible legal bulldozer. Behind them stepped two emergency medical technicians carrying a heated blanket and a portable medical kit.

Charles didn't look at Daniel, nor did he glance at Margaret. His sharp, grey eyes swept over the foyer, landing immediately on Emma—soaking wet, shivering, and standing alone on the cold marble floor.

"Get the heated blanket on her immediately!" Charles roared, his deep voice shaking the chandelier crystal above.

The paramedics moved with practiced speed, wrapping Emma in a thick, thermal wool blanket and guiding her gently onto a soft velvet armchair near the hallway fireplace.

Charles turned toward Margaret and Daniel, his face tight with a terrifying, cold fury.

"What in God's name have you done in my house?!" Charles demanded, walking slowly into the center of the foyer, his heavy boots echoing against the floor.

Margaret straightened her shoulders, attempting to pull her usual cloak of high-society authority around herself, though her hands were still shaking. "Charles! This is a private family matter! Daniel's wife pushed Vanessa down the stairs—"

"Shut your mouth, Margaret," Charles snapped, turning his glare upon her. "Do you think I am as foolish as your son? Do you think I don't have access to the security feeds of my own estate?"

Charles pulled a leather-bound folder from beneath his arm and threw it onto the marble coffee table in the center of the room.

"I watched the live stream of the foyer feed on my phone while driving here from the precinct," Charles revealed, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "I watched Vanessa throw herself down the stairs. And I watched you and Daniel pour ice water over a pregnant woman carrying the true heir to the Sterling Family Trust."

Daniel gasped, taking a step backward, his hands flying to his head. "Uncle Charles... please... I was misled! Vanessa lied to me! She told me she was carrying my child!"

Prosecutor Raymond Vance stepped forward, holding a legal folder.

"Vanessa Cole never was pregnant, Mr. Sterling," Prosecutor Vance announced in a flat, clinical tone. "We executed a court-subpoenaed warrant for her medical records from Mount Sinai Hospital three hours ago. Miss Cole underwent an elective procedure four months ago that rendered her permanently sterile. She has been faking her pregnancy using forged ultrasound documents purchased online."

The room seemed to lose all air.

Daniel turned slowly toward Vanessa, his eyes wide with horror and utter disbelief. "What... what did you say?"

Vanessa shrank back against the wooden balustrade of the staircase, her lip quivering, her face completely pale. "Daniel... I did it for us! I did it because your mother said she would help us get the estate if we got rid of Emma!"

Daniel froze. He looked slowly from Vanessa to his mother.

"Mother?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling. "You... you knew?"

Margaret’s face turned from pale to an ugly, mottled shade of red. "She was unsuitable, Daniel! Emma was a nobody! Her family has no political connections! Vanessa’s father is the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee! She was supposed to secure our firm's government contracts!"

Emma sat wrapped in the warm thermal blanket by the fireplace, listening to them argue over her life as if she were a piece of property. A quiet, bitter smile touched her lips.

"It was never about an baby, was it, Daniel?" Emma said softly, her voice carrying across the room. "It was always about the money."

Daniel threw himself onto his knees beside Emma’s armchair, tears streaming down his face as he tried to grasp her hand through the blanket. "Emma! I swear I didn't know about Vanessa's lie! I loved you! I was just angry... I thought she killed our baby's cousin! Please, Emma, look at me!"

Emma pulled her hand away beneath the blanket, looking down at him as if he were a bug on the floor.

"Don't touch me, Daniel," she said flatly. "And don't ever call my child your baby again."

Prosecutor Vance stepped up to Daniel and Margaret, pulling two sets of steel handcuffs from his coat.

"Daniel Sterling, Margaret Sterling," Vance announced sternly. "You are under arrest for domestic battery, aggravated assault on a pregnant individual, and conspiracy to commit physical endangerment."
