Chapter 3 - The Untangling of the Lies

The high-rise glass walls of the Cook County Judicial Complex overlooked a grey, rain-slicked city horizon.

Inside the fifth-floor deposition room, three days after the incident at the mansion, Emma sat at a polished mahogany table. She wore a simple, elegant navy wool dress, her dark hair pinned back neatly. Beside her sat Charles Sterling and her primary legal counsel, Eleanor Vance—the top family law attorney in the state.

Across the table sat Daniel, dressed in a grey detention jumpsuit, his wrists restrained by handcuffs linked to a belly chain. Beside him sat his defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton, who looked exhausted and thoroughly defeated.

Margaret was being held without bail in a separate wing of the county jail due to prior financial fraud investigations that Charles had triggered following her arrest.

"We are here to finalize the unconditional divorce settlement and custody agreement regarding Emma Sterling," Eleanor Vance began, placing a thick stack of legal documents on the center of the table.

Daniel stared across the table at Emma, his eyes bloodshot, his face hollow and sunken after three days in a holding cell.

"Emma... please," Daniel whimpered, his voice raspy. "You don't have to do this. We can get counseling. I'll give up my position at the firm! I'll cut my mother off completely! Just give me a chance to be a father to our child!"

"You had seven years of chances, Daniel," Emma said, her voice completely calm and void of emotion. "And when the test came, you chose a bucket of ice water."

Eleanor Vance tapped the documents in front of her.

"Under the terms of the prenuptial agreement," Eleanor stated, "Clause 14 clearly dictates that in the event of documented physical abuse or domestic violence committed by either party, the offending party forfeits all claims to joint marital assets, real estate, and parental decision-making rights."

Arthur Pendelton, Daniel's attorney, sighed deeply and leaned toward his client. "Daniel, sign the papers. If this goes to a jury trial with that foyer security footage, you will serve a mandatory minimum of seven years in state prison. Signing this agreement is the only way the prosecutor will reduce the charges to probation."

Daniel’s hands trembled so violently that the steel links of his handcuffs rattled loudly against the table.

"What about my firm?" Daniel choked out. "My shares in Sterling Capital..."

Charles Sterling leaned forward, resting his heavy forearms on the table, his grey eyes locked on his nephew.

"Sterling Capital no longer exists, Daniel," Charles said coldly. "The board of directors met yesterday morning. Following the public release of your arrest report and the discovery of Margaret’s systematic embezzlement from the client trust accounts, the firm was dissolved. Emma’s private investment group purchased eighty percent of the distressed assets at auction this morning."

Daniel stared at Emma in absolute shock. "You... you bought my company?"

"I bought the company I built with my inheritance while you were spending funds on Vanessa's penthouse," Emma corrected gently. "You are unemployed, Daniel. You own nothing."

With a shaking hand, Daniel picked up the pen handed to him by his lawyer. He signed his name on the dotted line at the bottom of each page, his tears falling onto the parchment and smudging the black ink.

As the final page was signed, Emma stood up from the table, pulling her wool coat over her shoulders.

"Emma, wait!" Daniel called out, straining against his restraints as the guards pulled him back into his chair. "Will I ever get to see the baby?! Just once?!"

Emma paused near the glass door, looking back at him over her shoulder.

"When my child grows up," Emma said softly, "I will tell them about their father. I will tell them that he was a man who let the cold water fall... and I will teach them never, ever to be like you."
