Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary of Light

One year later.

The summer ocean breeze blew softly across the high cliffs of Newport, Rhode Island. The sound of crashing waves echoed off the rocks below, carrying the clean, crisp scent of saltwater and wild flowers.

Standing on the sweeping back lawn of a gorgeous cedar-and-stone seaside estate was Emma. She wore a simple white linen sundress, her dark hair blowing gently across her face in the sunlight.

Beside her, holding her hand with a strong, warm grip, was Marcus Vance—a brilliant, kind-hearted civil architect and the younger brother of Prosecutor Raymond Vance. Over the last year, Marcus had helped Emma design and build her dream home away from the painful memories of Chicago.

Running across the thick green grass toward them was fourteen-month-old Leo. He was taking strong, confident toddler steps, letting out loud, joyous squeals of laughter as he chased a golden retriever puppy across the lawn.

"Slow down, little captain!" Marcus laughed, stepping forward and scooping Leo up into his arms, lifting him high into the air as the boy giggled uncontrollably.

Emma walked over to them, leaning her head against Marcus’s shoulder as he held Leo close.

"He has your eyes, Emma," Marcus said gently, looking down at her with unconditional love and quiet devotion.

"He has a happy heart, Marcus," Emma corrected softly, reaching up to tickle her son's tummy. "That’s all I ever wanted for him."

Far away from the cold marble foyers, the fake high-society galas, the greedy lies, and the buckets of ice water, Emma had built something permanent. She had built a home rooted in truth, protected by strength, and bathed in everlasting light.

Leo reached out his tiny hands, grabbing Emma’s index finger in one hand and Marcus’s thumb in the other, binding them together under the warm afternoon sun.

The nightmare was over. The cold had vanished forever. And their new story had just begun.
