PART 10 — THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

PART 10 — THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Marcus stayed in the chair long after Ethan disappeared.

The coffee in front of him went cold.

The people around him continued talking.

Laughing.

Living normal lives.

But Marcus felt like he had stepped into another reality.

Because one sentence had changed everything.

“Are you sure Elena is dead?”

Five years.

Five years of waking up every morning knowing his wife would never walk through the door again.

Five years of telling Lily that Mommy loved her but couldn’t come back.

Five years of carrying a grief so heavy he thought it had become part of his body.

And now…

Someone suggested it had all been a lie.

No.

Marcus shook his head.

It wasn’t possible.

He saw the hospital.

He saw the doctors.

He saw the reports.

He saw the funeral.

He remembered holding Lily while she cried.

He remembered lowering his wife into the ground.

That wasn’t something someone could fake.

Was it?

His phone rang.

Richard.

Marcus answered immediately.

“Tell me you found something.”

There was silence.

Then Richard said:

“I did.”

Marcus stood.

“What?”

“Come to the office.”

“Richard.”

His voice sharpened.

“I need answers now.”

Another pause.

Then Richard lowered his voice.

“I found an old medical file.”

Marcus froze.

“Whose?”

A long silence.

Then:

“Elena’s.”

Twenty minutes later, Marcus entered his private office.

Richard was waiting.

The file sat on the desk.

Old.

Dusty.

Hidden.

“What is this?”

Richard looked serious.

“It’s from a private medical facility.”

Marcus opened it.

The first page made his hands shake.

Patient:

Elena Vale.

Date:

Five years ago.

But the information was different.

Not a death report.

A transfer record.

Marcus looked up.

“This says she was moved.”

Richard nodded.

“Not declared dead.”

Marcus felt the room spin.

“No.”

He turned the page.

Again.

Again.

Searching for an explanation.

A mistake.

Anything.

But every page told the same story.

Elena was transferred.

Under protection.

“Why?”

Marcus’s voice broke.

“Why would anyone do this?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

Then Marcus saw the final note.

A handwritten message.

Not from a doctor.

From Elena.

His heart stopped.

He recognized her handwriting instantly.

Keep Marcus away.

Three words.

That was all.

Marcus stared.

Keep Marcus away?

Away from what?

Away from whom?

His wife.

The woman he loved.

Had chosen to leave him?

Or had someone forced her?

Another page fell from the folder.

A photograph.

Marcus picked it up.

His breathing stopped.

It was Elena.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Standing beside Rebecca.

The same woman who had come to his gate.

On the back of the photo:

She is safe for now.

For now.

Those words terrified him.

Because they meant she was still in danger.

Marcus immediately called Rebecca.

She answered after one ring.

“I was wondering when you would find it.”

Marcus’s voice was barely controlled.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Elena was alive.”

“Yes.”

The answer was calm.

Too calm.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Where is she?”

Silence.

Then Rebecca said:

“She doesn’t want you to find her.”

The words hurt more than he expected.

Even after everything…

Even after all the lies…

The possibility that Elena chose not to come back broke something inside him.

“Why?”

Rebecca sighed.

“Because she thought you and Lily would be safer without her.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Safer?”

His voice shook.

“She let me believe she was dead.”

“She protected you.”

“No.”

He looked at the photo.

“No. She destroyed me.”

Rebecca was silent.

Then she said:

“You need to hear her side.”

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Then let me.”

A pause.

“I can arrange it.”

Two hours later, Marcus drove to a private location outside the city.

A small house.

Hidden.

Protected.

His heart pounded the entire way.

Not from fear.

From something worse.

Hope.

A dangerous, painful hope.

Because if Elena was alive…

Everything changed.

And if she wasn’t who he remembered…

That would destroy him too.

The door opened.

Rebecca stood there.

“You came alone?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She stepped aside.

“Before you see her, you need to understand something.”

Marcus looked at her.

“What?”

“Elena didn’t leave you.”

A pause.

“She sacrificed herself.”

Marcus didn’t answer.

Rebecca continued.

“The people behind this threatened Lily.”

His expression changed.

“What did they threaten?”

Rebecca looked away.

“They said if Elena didn’t disappear…”

“Lily would disappear.”

Marcus felt sick.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Rebecca’s eyes softened.

“Because they were watching you.”

“You.”

“Your company.”

“Your home.”

“Everyone.”

Marcus remembered the cameras.

The threats.

Cassandra.

Ethan.

All pieces.

Then Rebecca stepped back.

“Go.”

Marcus entered.

The room was simple.

A table.

A couch.

A small lamp.

Nothing special.

Then he saw her.

Standing near the window.

Her back turned.

For a moment…

He couldn’t breathe.

Because he knew that silhouette.

That posture.

That way of holding herself.

“Elena.”

The woman froze.

Slowly…

She turned around.

And Marcus saw the face he had mourned for five years.

Older.

More tired.

But still her.

Her eyes filled immediately.

“Marcus…”

His name broke her.

And him.

Neither moved.

Neither knew what to say.

Five years of pain.

Five years of questions.

Five years of believing the other was gone.

All standing between them.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“Why?”

A single word.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to come home.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because they would have found us.”

“Who?”

She looked terrified.

Not for herself.

For Lily.

“The people who created this.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.”

Elena looked at him.

And whispered:

“Lily is not the target because of what she has.”

A pause.

“She is the target because of who she is.”

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Elena swallowed.

Then said the words that changed everything again.

“Lily is the key to exposing them.”

Marcus went still.

“And the person leading them…”

Elena’s voice shook.

“…is someone you trust more than anyone.”

A cold feeling moved through him.

“Who?”

Elena looked directly into his eyes.

And answered:

May you like

“Your father.”
