PART 3 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SMILE

PART 3 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SMILE

Cassandra Vale had always believed one thing about herself:

She was untouchable.

Not because she was powerful.

Not because she had money.

But because she understood people.

She knew what they wanted to see.

She knew how to speak.

How to smile.

How to make someone feel special.

And for years, that had been enough.

People loved her.

They praised her.

They trusted her.

The charity boards called her inspiring.

Business partners called her graceful.

Friends called her perfect.

But Marcus knew something now that nobody else knew.

Perfection was only a costume.

And Cassandra had finally made one mistake.

She forgot there were cameras.

The morning of the charity gala, Cassandra walked through the mansion like nothing had changed.

Like she was still the woman everyone believed she was.

She wore a silk robe.

Her hair was perfectly styled.

Her phone was filled with messages from important people.

Everyone wanted to talk to her.

Everyone wanted to be close to her.

“Mrs. Vale, the press team confirmed your arrival time.”

“Your speech draft is ready.”

“The board members are excited.”

Cassandra smiled.

“Wonderful.”

She loved those words.

Important.

Respected.

Admired.

She didn’t notice Marcus standing at the top of the stairs watching her.

Studying her.

For the first time, he wasn’t seeing the woman he loved.

He was seeing the woman she chose to show the world.

“Marcus.”

She looked up.

Her smile appeared instantly.

It was impressive.

Almost impossible.

If he hadn’t seen the video…

He might have believed it.

“Morning.”

She walked toward him.

“You disappeared yesterday.”

“I was busy.”

She touched his arm.

“Everything okay?”

Marcus looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why wouldn’t it be?”

She paused.

Only for a second.

But he saw it.

The calculation.

The question.

She was wondering.

Did he know?

Had someone told him?

Then the smile returned.

“Of course.”

Lily entered the room.

The moment she saw Cassandra, she stopped.

A tiny movement.

Barely noticeable.

But Marcus noticed.

Cassandra noticed too.

And something dark flashed in her eyes.

Not anger.

Annoyance.

Because Lily’s fear was no longer hidden.

Marcus walked to his daughter.

“Ready for school?”

Lily nodded.

“Yeah.”

Cassandra smiled.

“Have a good day, sweetheart.”

Lily didn’t answer.

She just walked closer to Marcus.

And held his hand.

That small gesture told him everything.

After Lily left, Marcus sat in his office.

His lawyer, Richard, sat across from him.

The security footage was open on the screen.

Richard watched silently.

Then he removed his glasses.

“Marcus…”

His voice was quiet.

“I’ve handled some ugly cases.”

A pause.

“But this…”

He looked at the screen.

“This is serious.”

Marcus stared forward.

“I know.”

“What do you want to do?”

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Because a part of him wanted revenge.

Real revenge.

He wanted Cassandra exposed.

Destroyed.

He wanted everyone who praised her to see what she really was.

But then he remembered Lily.

His daughter didn’t need revenge.

She needed safety.

“She will never get near my daughter again.”

Richard nodded.

“Then we need to move carefully.”

“I know.”

“We need proof beyond doubt.”

Marcus looked at the screen.

“I have it.”

But Marcus still had one question.

Why?

Why would Cassandra do this?

Why Lily?

Why a child?

He had searched his own memories.

Every conversation.

Every moment.

Trying to find the warning signs.

And there were some.

Small ones.

Things he ignored.

Like the way Cassandra hated when Lily talked about Elena.

Like the way she corrected Lily’s drawings.

Like the time Lily asked to keep her mother’s necklace and Cassandra said:

“Some things from the past should disappear.”

At the time, Marcus thought she meant healing.

Now he knew.

She meant erasing.

That evening, Cassandra prepared for the gala.

The mansion staff moved around her.

Dresses.

Flowers.

Jewelry.

Everything had to be perfect.

She looked at herself in the mirror.

The reflection looked flawless.

She smiled.

“You’re almost there.”

She whispered.

“Just a little longer.”

She believed Marcus was still hers.

She believed Lily was just a difficult child.

She believed everyone would believe her.

And she was right about one thing.

People did believe her.

Until they saw the truth.

The gala began at seven.

The ballroom was filled with hundreds of guests.

Executives.

Celebrities.

Donors.

People who wanted to be associated with Cassandra.

Marcus arrived with Lily.

Cassandra greeted them near the entrance.

She looked radiant.

The cameras loved her.

Reporters asked questions.

“How does it feel to lead such a successful charity?”

Cassandra smiled.

“It’s not about me.”

She placed a hand over her heart.

“It’s about helping families.”

Marcus almost laughed.

Because the irony was unbearable.

Helping families.

While destroying his.

During dinner, Cassandra gave a speech.

Everyone listened.

She talked about kindness.

Compassion.

Protecting children.

Marcus sat silently.

Lily sat beside him.

Holding his hand.

Halfway through the speech, Marcus received a message.

From his attorney.

Everything is ready.

He looked at the stage.

At Cassandra.

At the crowd.

Then he made a decision.

Not tonight.

Not yet.

Because Cassandra deserved something worse than being exposed privately.

She deserved to watch her entire illusion disappear.

After the speech, Cassandra came to their table.

“You didn’t say anything.”

Marcus looked at her.

“About?”

“My speech.”

He smiled slightly.

“It was convincing.”

She laughed.

“Is that a compliment?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“It is.”

She looked pleased.

Because she heard what she wanted.

Approval.

She didn’t hear the meaning underneath.

Later that night, Cassandra went backstage.

Her assistant followed.

“Everything went perfectly.”

Cassandra smiled.

“I know.”

“You’re amazing.”

Cassandra looked at herself in the mirror.

“I know.”

The assistant laughed nervously.

But then Cassandra’s expression changed.

Because her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

No voice.

Only a video file.

She opened it.

And her face slowly changed.

Because the video wasn’t from the gala.

It was from the kitchen.

The dog bowl.

Lily crying.

Her own voice.

Every cruel word.

Every moment.

Cassandra stopped breathing.

The assistant noticed.

“Mrs. Vale?”

Cassandra slowly looked up.

The color drained from her face.

Because she realized something.

Marcus knew.

She rushed back into the ballroom.

Searching.

Looking for him.

But Marcus was gone.

Lily was gone.

And on her phone…

One message appeared.

Tomorrow. Noon. Come home. We need to talk.

Below it:

Bring your explanation.

Cassandra stared.

Then another message appeared.

One sentence.

And this time…

It terrified her.

May you like

Because everyone will hear the truth.

TO BE CONTINUED…
