PART 6 — THE SECRET ELENA LEFT BEHIND

PART 6 — THE SECRET ELENA LEFT BEHIND

Marcus stared at the photograph for what felt like hours.

The image was old.

Slightly faded.

But there was no mistake.

It was Elena.

His Elena.

The woman he loved.

The woman he lost.

Standing outside a restaurant with a man Marcus had never seen before.

They weren’t smiling.

They weren’t posing.

They looked serious.

Like they were discussing something important.

Something dangerous.

Marcus turned the photo over again.

The words burned into his mind.

Cassandra wasn’t the beginning. She was only the first mistake.

A thousand questions rushed through him.

Who was the man?

How did he know Elena?

Why did Elena hide this?

And why did Cassandra enter their lives before Elena died?

Marcus had spent five years believing he understood the tragedy that destroyed his family.

Now he realized he had only known the version everyone allowed him to know.

He picked up his phone.

Called his attorney.

The moment Richard answered, Marcus spoke.

“I need a favor.”

Richard immediately noticed his tone.

“What happened?”

“I found something.”

A pause.

“What kind of something?”

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Something that changes everything.”

Twenty minutes later, Richard arrived.

Marcus placed the photo on the table.

Richard studied it.

Then looked up.

“Who is this?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where did you get it?”

“Someone left it at my gate.”

Richard frowned.

“Someone got close enough to your property to leave this?”

Marcus nodded.

The security footage had already been checked.

Whoever left it knew where the blind spots were.

That meant one thing.

They weren’t random.

They knew the house.

They knew Marcus.

Richard picked up the photo again.

“Have you seen him before?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“Ask Lily?”

The suggestion made Marcus uncomfortable.

“She’s eight.”

“I know.”

Richard lowered his voice.

“But Elena wrote that only Lily could find the truth.”

Marcus looked away.

Because he didn’t want to involve Lily.

Not again.

She had already suffered enough.

But if Elena had hidden something…

Maybe she had hidden it for a reason.

That evening, Marcus waited until Lily finished dinner.

He sat beside her on the couch.

No pressure.

No questions.

Just time.

Finally, he spoke.

“Sweetheart?”

“Yes?”

“Do you remember Mommy’s things?”

Lily nodded.

“Some.”

“What things?”

She thought.

“Her necklace.”

Marcus froze.

“What necklace?”

“The silver one.”

His heart beat faster.

“Where is it?”

Lily shrugged.

“I don’t know.”

“Did Mommy ever tell you anything about it?”

The little girl became quiet.

Too quiet.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“Lily?”

She looked at him.

“Cassandra told me not to talk about it.”

The room went cold.

“What did she say?”

Lily looked nervous.

“She said Mommy’s necklace was dangerous.”

Marcus felt anger rise.

A child.

She had frightened a child with memories of her own mother.

“What else?”

Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“She said if Daddy found out, people would get hurt.”

Marcus went still.

People.

Not him.

Not Cassandra.

People.

That meant Cassandra knew something bigger.

Marcus didn’t sleep.

He searched through every box connected to Elena.

Old jewelry.

Photos.

Documents.

Letters.

Nothing.

Until he remembered something.

The necklace.

Elena always wore it.

A simple silver pendant.

She said it was special.

He had never asked why.

Because he thought it was just sentimental.

Now he wondered.

What had she hidden inside it?

The next morning, Marcus called a jeweler he trusted.

A specialist.

Someone who worked with antique pieces.

When he described the necklace, the jeweler went silent.

“Mr. Vale…”

“Yes?”

“That pendant design is unusual.”

“How?”

“It has a hidden compartment.”

Marcus stopped.

“What?”

“It’s an old style. People used them to hide small objects.”

Marcus felt his heartbeat increase.

“Can you open one?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

The jeweler hesitated.

“Today.”

Marcus drove home.

For the first time in days, he felt something close to hope.

Not happiness.

Not peace.

But direction.

There was something Elena wanted him to find.

Something she trusted him to discover.

And maybe…

The answers were finally coming.

When Marcus arrived, Lily was drawing.

He smiled slightly.

“What are you making?”

She turned the paper around.

A family.

Marcus.

Lily.

And Elena.

The three of them.

Together.

Marcus felt his eyes burn.

“It’s beautiful.”

Lily smiled.

“I wanted Mommy to be here.”

Marcus sat beside her.

“I know.”

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are you going to leave too?”

The question destroyed him.

“No.”

He immediately answered.

“Never.”

She looked at him.

“Promise?”

Marcus held her hand.

“I promise.”

That afternoon, the jeweler arrived.

He placed the necklace on the table.

The silver pendant looked exactly as Marcus remembered.

Small.

Simple.

Almost ordinary.

But when the jeweler opened the hidden compartment…

Everything changed.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

And a folded piece of paper.

Marcus stopped breathing.

The paper had Elena’s handwriting.

Only one sentence.

Marcus, if you found this, it means I was right not to trust Cassandra.

His hands shook.

He looked at Lily.

Then back at the note.

The jeweler quietly stepped away.

Marcus unfolded the paper.

More words appeared.

There is something you need to know about Lily’s past.

Marcus frowned.

Lily’s past?

What could that mean?

He continued.

The night I died wasn’t the only thing Cassandra lied about.

A pause.

Then:

Lily was never supposed to be alone with her.

Marcus felt sick.

Because that meant Elena knew.

She knew Cassandra was dangerous.

And still…

She had died before she could stop it.

Then the final sentence.

The sentence that made Marcus drop the paper.

Cassandra was not trying to destroy our family.

A pause.

She was trying to get access to something Lily carries.

Marcus stared.

Something Lily carries?

What?

Before he could think…

The memory card activated.

A video appeared.

Elena.

Again.

But this time…

She wasn’t smiling.

She looked scared.

And the first words she said were:

“If you’re watching this, Marcus…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I failed to protect our daughter.”

Marcus covered his mouth.

Because Elena’s next sentence changed everything.

“Lily’s birth was not an accident.”

The screen flickered.

Then Elena whispered:

“Someone has been searching for her since the day she was born.”

Marcus felt the world stop.

Because the truth was much bigger than Cassandra.

Much darker.

And now…

May you like

His daughter was the center of it.

TO BE CONTINUED…
