PART 10 — The Last Person They Expected

I stared at the photo.
My fingers went numb.
The image was clear.
Too clear.
Richard Whitmore stood across the street from the hospital.
Older.
Thinner.
Different.
But unmistakable.
The man my family buried twelve years ago was alive.
And he was watching my daughter.
I immediately stood up.
The chair scraped loudly against the floor.
The nurse at the station looked over.
"Ms. Carter?"
I quickly locked my phone.
"Nothing."
But everything had changed.
Because this wasn't about revenge anymore.
It wasn't about money.
It wasn't even about exposing my family.
It was about protecting Sophie.
I pressed the emergency button beside the bed.
Security arrived within minutes.
The hospital entrance was locked down.
The parking areas were checked.
Every hallway was searched.
But Richard was already gone.
Like a ghost.
Like someone who had spent years learning how to disappear.
Officer Brooks arrived before sunrise.
When I showed him the message, his expression hardened.
"This changes everything."
"Why?"
"Because now we know he isn't just involved."
"He is actively targeting you."
I looked toward Sophie's room.
"Can you protect us?"
He didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
"But we need to move quickly."
That morning, Sophie woke up.
The first thing she asked was:
"Mommy, are we going home?"
I smiled gently.
"Soon."
She looked at the bandage on her head.
Then quietly asked:
"Is Uncle Preston still mad at me?"
My heart broke.
Even after everything...
She was worried about him.
Not herself.
I sat beside her.
"No, sweetheart."
"He was wrong."
"But it was never because of you."
She nodded.
Then whispered:
"I knew you would believe me."
I held her hand.
"Always."
A few hours later, something unexpected happened.
My father came back.
But this time...
He wasn't alone.
He brought a lawyer.
And a box.
I frowned.
"What is that?"
He placed it on the table.
"Your grandmother's."
I looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because she left something for you."
I stared at him.
"My grandmother died years ago."
He nodded.
"Before she passed, she asked me to give this to you when you needed it."
I opened the box slowly.
Inside was an old letter.
My hands trembled.
The handwriting was familiar.
My dear Evelyn,
If you are reading this, then something has happened that made your father finally open this box.
I always knew you were different.
You were never the weak one in this family.
You were the honest one.
And honesty often scares people who live in lies.
My eyes filled with tears.
I kept reading.
Your mother loved you, but she was consumed by fear.
Your brother was praised, but praise without discipline creates monsters.
Never confuse being chosen with being loved.
Real love protects you.
Real love tells you the truth.
I had to stop reading.
Because those words touched every wound I had carried my entire life.
My father sat quietly.
"I should have listened to her."
I looked up.
"Grandma knew?"
He nodded.
"She saw Preston changing."
"She warned me."
"But I ignored her."
"Because I thought I could fix everything."
I closed the letter.
"And Richard?"
My father's face darkened.
"Your grandmother suspected him too."
"She knew he wasn't dead."
I froze.
"What?"
He looked down.
"She found evidence."
"But before she could expose him..."
"She disappeared from the family."
The pieces came together.
My grandmother wasn't pushed away because she was old.
She was pushed away because she knew too much.
Suddenly—
The lights went out.
The entire hospital floor went dark.
A second later, alarms started screaming.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Everyone froze.
Officer Brooks immediately reached for his radio.
"Lock down the floor!"
My heart raced.
Because I already knew.
This wasn't random.
Not this time.
A nurse ran into the room.
"Someone cut the power to this wing."
Brooks looked at me.
"Stay here."
But then...
The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Everyone turned.
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
Sophie's hand grabbed mine.
"Mommy..."
I pulled her close.
The door opened.
And a man stepped inside.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Richard Whitmore.
Nobody moved.
The entire room held its breath.
Richard looked around.
Then his eyes stopped on me.
"Evelyn."
His voice was almost gentle.
"I was hoping we could talk."
Officer Brooks stepped forward.
"Richard Whitmore, you're under arrest."
Richard smiled.
"No."
He looked at me.
"Not yet."
Then he lifted something in his hand.
A small remote device.
Everyone froze.
Richard tilted his head.
"You always were the problem, Evelyn."
"Always asking questions."
"Always finding the truth."
He looked at Sophie.
"But now..."
His smile faded.
"I think you'll finally understand."
My blood ran cold.
"What did you do?"
He smiled.
"The same thing your brother tried to do."
"Create a story."
"A story where everyone believes you are the villain."
Then he pressed the button.
A loud alarm sounded from somewhere deep inside the hospital.
And every screen in the room suddenly turned on.
Displaying one message:
EVENLY CARTER IS THE THREAT.
My breath stopped.
Because Richard wasn't trying to hurt me.
He was trying to destroy my life.
My reputation.
My daughter.
Everything.
But he made one mistake.
The same mistake Preston made.
He underestimated me.

And this time...
I wasn't alone.
