PART 9 — The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The room went silent.
Even the ticking clock on the wall seemed too loud.
I stared at Vanessa.
My mind refused to process what she had just said.
"My uncle?"
She nodded.
"Your uncle was alive."
I shook my head slowly.
"No."
"Everyone knows he died twelve years ago."
"That's what everyone was told."
My father stepped forward.
His face had lost all color.
"Vanessa..."
"Tell her everything."
She looked at him.
Then at me.
"I should have done this sooner."
Her voice trembled.
"But I was afraid."
"Of Preston?"
She hesitated.
"Not just Preston."
Vanessa reached into her bag and pulled out a folder.
She placed it on the table.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Bank transfers.
And a passport.
I picked up the first photo.
A man standing beside Preston.
Older.
Gray hair.
But unmistakable.
My uncle, Richard Whitmore.
The man everyone believed had died in a car accident.
My hands started shaking.
"How?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"He faked his death."
I looked at my father.
"You knew?"
He looked away.
That was my answer.
My chest tightened.
"My entire family knew?"
My father whispered,
"Not everyone."
"But enough people."
Vanessa explained.
"Richard had been stealing from Whitmore Holdings for years."
"When your father discovered it, he threatened to expose him."
"So Richard created a plan."
"A fake accident."
"A new identity."
"A hidden life."
I stared at the documents.
"And Preston?"
Her eyes darkened.
"Richard trained him."
"Since he was young."
A horrible realization formed.
Preston wasn't just spoiled.
He wasn't just protected.
He had been shaped.
Taught.
Prepared.
For what?
"Why?"
I asked.
"Why involve Sophie?"
Vanessa looked at the floor.
"Because you were the problem."
I frowned.
"Me?"
She nodded.
"Richard believed you were the only person who could destroy everything."
"Why would he think that?"
Vanessa looked at my father.
"He knew your father trusted you."
"He knew you were the only one who never cared about money."
"And that's why he hated you."
The words hurt.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they explained so much.
My whole life...
I thought I was the unwanted child.
The difficult daughter.
The disappointment.
But maybe...
I was the one person in the family who couldn't be controlled.
The detective arrived thirty minutes later.
When he saw the documents, his expression changed.
"Where did you get these?"
Vanessa answered:
"Richard gave them to Preston."
"Preston was supposed to use them as leverage."
"But when things went wrong..."
She looked at me.
"He panicked."
The detective flipped through the files.
"This is enough to reopen the old case."
My father sat down heavily.
"All these years..."
He covered his face.
"I protected the wrong people."
Then Vanessa pulled out one final piece of evidence.
A small audio recorder.
"What is that?"
She looked at me.
"The reason I came here."
"I recorded Preston."
The detective immediately took it.
"When?"
"Last night."
"He called me after the arrest."
"He thought I would still help him escape."
Everyone waited.
The detective pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Preston's voice.
Angry.
Frustrated.
"You idiot!"
"You were supposed to make sure the girl took the blame!"
Vanessa's voice answered:
"She almost died."
A pause.
Then Preston laughed.
"That's the point."
My blood turned cold.
"If she was hurt badly enough..."
"Everyone would believe Evelyn was unstable."
"Everyone would finally see her as the problem."
The recording continued.
Vanessa whispered:
"What about the cameras?"
"They'll never know."
Preston replied:
"Mom will handle it."
"And Dad?"
A pause.
Then:
"Dad always chooses me."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone heard the truth.
Not rumors.
Not accusations.
The truth.
My mother began crying.
My father looked completely broken.
And me?
I felt nothing.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Just emptiness.
Because there are some betrayals too deep for tears.
The detective looked at me.
"Ms. Carter."
"Your brother, your uncle, and several others will be charged."
"But there is one thing you should know."
"What?"
He hesitated.
"Your uncle Richard was never found."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The documents prove he was alive."
"But we don't know where he is now."
The room suddenly felt colder.
Because if Richard was alive...
He was still free.
Still watching.
Still waiting.
That night, after everyone left, I sat beside Sophie.
She was finally sleeping peacefully.
The hospital monitor beeped softly.
For the first time in days...
I felt safe.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
A photo.
My heart stopped.
It was Richard.
Standing outside the hospital.
Watching my daughter through the window.
The message said:
"You should have stayed quiet, Evelyn."
Then another message appeared.
"Now I have no reason to be careful."
I looked at Sophie.
And I knew.
May you like
The nightmare wasn't over.
It had only changed faces.
