PART 7 — The Secret Behind the Perfect Family

I stared at the screen.
Two words.
Mom Whitmore.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The detective watched my face carefully.
"Ms. Carter?"
I swallowed.
"My mother?"
He nodded slowly.
"We're still verifying everything."
"But the message was sent eleven minutes before the incident."
My hands went cold.
Eleven minutes.
Before Preston announced the missing phone.
Before Sophie was accused.
Before the oak board came crashing down.
This wasn't a family argument.
It wasn't an emotional outburst.
It was a plan.
"What did the message say?"
The detective hesitated.
Then opened the recovered text.
The words appeared on the screen.
"Everything is ready. Make sure Evelyn loses control. Once the child is blamed, no one will believe her."
My chest tightened.
I felt like the room had tilted.
My own mother.
The woman who held me when I was sick.
The woman who helped me choose my wedding dress.
The woman who looked at my bleeding daughter and told me to stop making a scene.
She wasn't protecting Preston.
She was helping him.
The detective continued.
"There are more messages."
He scrolled.
Most were between Vanessa and Preston.
Planning.
Timing.
Details.
But one message caught my attention.
From my father.
My heart stopped.
"Your mother says the girl must take the blame. We cannot let Evelyn expose the truth about the company."
I stared.
"The company?"
The detective looked at me.
"You didn't know?"
I shook my head.
"What company?"
He pulled up another file.
A financial report.
My brother's name appeared.
Whitmore Holdings.
A company my father had built.
A company everyone believed Preston would inherit.
The detective explained,
"Three months ago, your father discovered irregular transfers."
"Millions of dollars were missing."
"Someone had been moving funds through shell companies."
My stomach dropped.
"Preston."
He nodded.
"Most likely."
Suddenly, everything made sense.
Why Preston hated me.
Why he wanted me humiliated.
Why my parents protected him.
Because if he fell...
Their entire empire fell with him.
And my daughter?
She was simply the easiest person to sacrifice.
A nurse suddenly appeared at the door.
"Ms. Carter?"
I turned immediately.
"Yes?"
She smiled gently.
"Your daughter is awake."
The world stopped again.
"Is she okay?"
"She has a concussion."
"Several stitches."
"But she's stable."
My knees almost gave out from relief.
"Can I see her?"
The nurse nodded.
"Of course."
When I entered Sophie's room, she looked so small.
A white bandage covered part of her hair.
Her eyes were tired.
But she smiled when she saw me.
"Mommy."
I rushed to her side.
"Hey, sweetheart."
I kissed her forehead carefully.
"How are you feeling?"
"My head hurts."
"But I'm okay."
Tears filled my eyes.
"I'm so sorry."
She frowned.
"Why?"
"Because I couldn't protect you."
She looked confused.
"Mommy..."
"You did protect me."
I looked at her.
She smiled weakly.
"You believed me."
That was all she needed.
A few minutes later, Officer Brooks arrived.
He stood at the door.
"Sorry to interrupt."
I nodded.
"What's happening?"
His expression was serious.
"We arrested Preston."
"But Vanessa is missing."
My heart sank.
"What?"
"She left the hotel before we could question her."
"She knew we had the footage."
Of course.
She always knew.
Then Officer Brooks placed an evidence bag on the table.
Inside was a small silver USB drive.
"We found this in Vanessa's hotel room."
"What is it?"
"We don't know yet."
"But she labeled it."
He turned the bag.
Written in black marker were three words.
FINAL BACKUP PLAN
I stared at it.
"Can you open it?"
"We're working on it."
He paused.
"Ms. Carter..."
"There's something else."
"What?"
"The camera footage from the ballroom wasn't the only recording."
"Vanessa had a hidden camera."
My heart sank.
"Where?"
"In your parents' house."
The room became silent.
"Why would she have a camera there?"
Officer Brooks looked at the USB drive.
"We believe she recorded conversations."
"About what?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"About your family."
That night, while Sophie slept, I sat beside her hospital bed.
I watched my daughter breathe.
I thought about all the years I spent trying to be accepted.
Trying to prove I was worthy.
Trying to make my family love me.
And I finally understood something.
Some people don't reject you because you're wrong.
They reject you because your truth threatens their comfort.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
I opened it.
My blood froze.
A photo.
It was Vanessa.
Standing outside the hospital.
Watching my daughter's room.
The message underneath said:
"You found the footage."
"Now find out what happens when you destroy a family."
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
"Ask your father why Preston was never supposed to be your mother's favorite."
I looked at the sleeping child beside me.
And for the first time...
May you like
I realized this story was much bigger than one wedding.
Someone had been lying for years.
