Chapter 5 - THE POINT OF NO RETURN

The air inside the VIP lounge instantly turned cold.

Julian Drake paused with his champagne glass halfway to his mouth, his brow furrowing as he looked between the couple.

Mason froze. Slowly, he turned his head to look at Claire. The veins in his neck were bulging against his collar, his face flushed deep red with booze and sudden, explosive rage.

"What did you just say?" Mason asked softly.

"I said no, Mason," Claire repeated, her voice perfectly clear, calm, and resonant. "I am not giving you access to the riverfront development credit lines. I am not funding your illegal cargo shipments. And when we leave this club tonight, you are packing your bags and leaving my father's estate."

Julian’s bodyguards straightened up instantly, their hands moving closer to their jackets.

Julian set his glass down on the glass table with a heavy thud. "Mason... what the hell is this? You told me you had full control over the Whitmore assets."

"I DO control them!" Mason screamed, slamming his fist onto the velvet couch.

Several people at neighboring tables turned around to look.

Mason stood up, towering over Claire, his face distorted into an ugly, unhinged mask of sheer fury. Nine months of absolute dominance were crumbling in front of Julian Drake, in front of the city's underworld, in front of everyone.

"You embarrassing little bitch!" Mason roared, reaching down and violently grabbing Claire by the arm, pulling her off the couch.

Claire didn't scream. She stumbled slightly on her heels, but she kept her eyes locked on his.

"Let go of me, Mason," she said quietly.

"You think you can play games with me in front of my business partners?!" Mason snarled, his voice echoing over the music. "You think because your name is on a building you can talk to me like that?! I built you! I protected you!"

"You isolated me," Claire corrected, her grey eyes burning with absolute clarity. "You stole from my foundation. You threatened my workers. You're nothing but a parasite living off my family's name."

Julian Drake stood up, stepping back from the table. "Mason, get this woman out of here. This meeting is over."

"No!" Mason roared, completely out of his mind.

He reached into his inner velvet jacket pocket.

Julian’s bodyguards reached for their firearms, expecting a gun.

Instead, Mason pulled out a small, heavy glass vial, roughly three inches long, filled with a thick, amber-colored liquid. The cap was made of heavy rubber.

Claire’s eyes widened. She recognized the bottle—it was high-concentration industrial sulfuric acid, stolen from the Whitmore Development chemical testing labs three weeks ago.

"You love your pretty face, don't you?" Mason whispered, his voice shaking with a terrifying, psychopathic delirium. "You think you're better than me because of your face and your daddy's money?"

"Mason..." Julian warned, taking another step back, horrified by the unhinged display. "Don't be a fool..."

"If I can't have you," Mason growled, twisting the rubber stopper off the glass vial with his teeth and spitting it onto the floor, "I'll make sure NOBODY ever wants you!"

He drew his arm back, preparing to throw the burning liquid directly into Claire’s face.

Claire stood frozen. Her lungs forgot how to pull in air. She saw the amber liquid sloshing inside the clear glass, saw the dark madness in Mason's eyes, saw her entire life ending in a single second of agony.

Mason swung his hand forward.

SPLASH!

The first drop of acid never reached Claire’s face.

It landed six inches from her hand instead, striking the black velvet couch with a vicious, violent hiss that instantly dissolved the fabric, sending a plume of acrid white smoke into the air.

Half the people in the VIP lounge stumbled backward in sheer terror.

Claire did not scream. She couldn't.

Because before Mason could fling the rest of the chemical, a thick, powerful hand closed around his tattooed wrist.

Not violently.

Not frantically.

Just absolutely.

Mason’s arm was locked in place as if it had been clamped into an iron vice.

Mason turned his head violently, his face twisted with rage. "What the—!"

The man standing beside him was the stranger from the charcoal suit.

Up close, he was imposing—over six-foot-two, with broad shoulders, a sharp, sun-bronzed face, and eyes as cold and grey as a winter ocean. He held Mason’s wrist with effortless, terrifying strength, completely ignoring Mason's frantic attempts to yank his arm free.

The stranger didn't look at Mason at first.

He looked at the smoking velvet couch.

Then he looked at Claire, checking her skin, her eyes, ensuring not a single drop had touched her.

Finally, he turned his cold grey eyes back to Mason Cole.

"You brought acid into a crowded room," the stranger said quietly, his voice dangerously smooth. "And aimed it at a woman who already told you no."

Mason’s face instantly drained of all color. The anger, the alcohol, the cocaine-fueled bravado evaporated from his system in a single, terrifying instant.

Recognition had finally arrived.

"You're..." Mason stammered, his knees visibly trembling. "You're Vance... Alexander Vance..."

The stranger’s lips curved into a faint, merciless smile.

May you like

"Yes," Alexander Vance said quietly.

"And you have just made the worst decision of your life."
