Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL OF MASON COLE

In July, the Charleston County Courthouse was packed to capacity for the sentencing hearing of Mason Cole and Julian Drake.

Media cameras lined the stone steps outside, broadcast trucks filling the surrounding streets. The trial had captivated the state for months—a dark tale of high-society extortion, illegal port syndicates, and a brave heiress who had brought down an empire.

Claire sat in the front row of the courtroom, wearing a navy blue silk dress. Alexander sat beside her, his hand lightly covering hers on the wooden bench.

Across the room, at the defense table, sat Mason Cole.

He wore an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands and feet chained together with heavy steel shackles. He had lost thirty pounds in federal detention. His broad shoulders were slouched, his dark hair thinning, his once-intimidating tattoos now looking faded against his pale skin.

The judge, a formidable woman in her sixties with sharp blue eyes, tapped her gavel.

"In the matter of the State versus Mason Cole," the judge began, her voice echoing in the silent courtroom. "The defendant has been found guilty on eleven federal counts, including racketeering, wire fraud, illegal transportation of firearms, and assault with a deadly weapon."

The judge looked down over her glasses at Mason.

"Mr. Cole, your actions were not merely criminal; they were calculated, sadistic, and designed to strip a grieving woman of her dignity, her wealth, and her safety. You operated under the delusion that fear makes a man powerful."

The judge turned her gaze toward Claire, smiling faintly.

"Ms. Whitmore proved that true power lies in dignity, truth, and unyielding courage."

The judge struck her heavy wooden gavel against the sound block.

"Mason Cole is hereby sentenced to thirty-eight years at the Broad River Correctional Institution, without the possibility of parole."

A loud wave of murmurs and applause swept through the courtroom.

Mason was stood up by two armed bailiffs. As he was led toward the side exit, he turned his head to look at Claire one last time.

He looked for fear in her eyes. He looked for hurt. He looked for a single sign that he had left a permanent scar on her soul.

Claire looked back at him.

Her face was calm. Her grey eyes were clear.

She simply turned her attention back to Alexander, engaging in a quiet conversation, completely ignoring Mason as if he were nothing more than a passing shadow on a summer afternoon.

Mason’s shoulders slumped completely as the iron door clicked shut behind him, sealing him in the dark forever.
