Chapter 6 - THE GUARDIAN IN THE DARK

Before Mason could process the words, three tall men in dark charcoal suits moved into the VIP lounge with terrifying, military efficiency.

Without uttering a single word, two of Alexander Vance’s men stepped between Julian Drake’s bodyguards and the table. They didn't draw weapons; they simply stood there, their hands folded in front of them, displaying a quiet, deadly confidence that made Julian’s heavy-set enforcers immediately take three steps back and look down at the floor.

Mason’s friends—the men he had brought from the docks—suddenly found fascinating reasons to stare at the neon signs on the ceiling.

Alexander Vance did not loosen his grip on Mason’s wrist.

Slowly, effortlessly, Alexander twisted Mason's arm backward.

CRACK!

A sharp, sickening pop echoed through the VIP lounge as Mason's wrist dislocated.

"AAAAAHHHH!" Mason screamed, dropping to his knees on the carpeted floor.

The glass vial slipped from his paralyzed fingers.

Alexander caught the small glass bottle in mid-air with his left hand, smoothly popping a silver cap onto the top before handing it to one of his assistants.

"Evidence," Alexander noted calmly.

Mason lay on the floor, clutching his broken wrist, sobbing in pain and terror. He looked up at Alexander Vance—a man whose name was whispered with dread across financial boardrooms and federal prosecution offices alike.

Alexander Vance was not a gangster. He was the founder and Chief Executive of Vance Global Intelligence—a private, ultra-exclusive firm that specialized in dismantling high-level corporate syndicates, human trafficking networks, and organized crime families that operated above the law.

He was a former military intelligence operative who had spent ten years working with federal task forces to clean up corrupt ports along the Eastern Seaboard.

And for four months, Alexander Vance had been working directly with Claire Whitmore.

Alexander turned away from the sobbing man on the floor and walked over to Claire.

The coldness in his eyes vanished, replaced by a deep, quiet warmth.

"Are you hurt, Claire?" he asked softly.

Claire took her first deep breath in nearly a minute. She looked at Alexander’s calm, handsome face, then looked down at Mason, who was cowering on the floor like a beaten dog.

For nine months, Mason had made her feel small. He had made her believe he was an immovable force of nature, a dangerous king who owned Charleston.

Now, seeing him weeping at the feet of a real man, Claire realized the ultimate truth.

Mason Cole had never been powerful.

He had simply made sure she was always alone.

"I'm not hurt, Alexander," Claire said, her voice steady and strong.

Alexander extended his arm toward her. "Then let us finish this."

Claire placed her hand over Alexander’s dark suit sleeve.

Alexander turned his gaze toward Julian Drake, who was standing frozen against the far wall, his hands raised slightly in surrender.

"Julian," Alexander said, his voice carrying effortlessly over the low thud of the club music. "Federal agents and the South Carolina State Police are currently executing search warrants on Containers 402 through 415 at Port Terminal Seven. Your logistics license has been revoked. I suggest you call your legal counsel before the federal marshals arrive at your residence."

Julian’s face went completely grey. "Vance... please, I didn't know about the acid... I had nothing to do with Mason’s personal business..."

"You did business with a parasite," Alexander said coldly. "Now you share his fate."

Alexander turned to his lead security officer. "Keep Mason Cole pinned right there until Detective Miller arrives with the felony assault warrant."

"Yes, Mr. Vance," the officer replied, stepping heavily on Mason's shoulder to keep him pressed against the carpet.

Alexander escorted Claire down the velvet steps of the VIP lounge.

As they walked through the dancing crowd on the main floor, people parted like the Red Sea, staring in awe and shock at the Whitmore heiress walking side-by-side with the most powerful intelligence operative in the country.

Claire walked with her head held high, her spine straight, leaving the smoke, the acid, and the ghosts of her past behind her forever.
