Part 7: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Part 7: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For a long time, I just stared at the screen.

I read the message again.

Then again.

My brain refused to process it.

Especially not your husband.

Those words felt impossible.

Because Daniel was dead.

I saw his body.

I saw the funeral.

I saw the coffin.

I held his photograph while people whispered how unfair life was.

I watched Lily cry until she couldn’t breathe.

I spent eleven months trying to teach myself how to live without him.

And now someone was telling me he might be alive.

And worse…

That I shouldn’t trust him.

The officer noticed my face.

“Mrs. Parker?”

I slowly handed him my phone.

He read the message.

His expression changed.

“This is getting worse.”

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because my life had become something I couldn’t recognize.

“Worse?”

I looked at him.

“My husband might be alive.”

Silence.

The officer looked at the photo.

Then zoomed in.

“Do you recognize this location?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He studied the image.

“But you recognize him?”

I looked at Daniel’s face.

The face I had kissed.

The face I had memorized.

“Yes.”

My voice cracked.

“That’s him.”

The officer looked at his partner.

“Run facial analysis.”

Then he turned back to me.

“Mrs. Parker, I need you to answer something.”

“What?”

“Did your husband ever disappear before?”

The question confused me.

“What?”

“Travel without telling you? Leave unexpectedly? Use another identity?”

I stared.

“No.”

Daniel wasn’t like that.

He told me everything.

At least…

I thought he did.

The officer noticed my hesitation.

“You’re not sure.”

I looked away.

“I’m not sure about anything anymore.”

A few minutes later, the results came back.

The officer looked at the screen.

Then at me.

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

“Facial match is inconclusive.”

I frowned.

“Inconclusive?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He showed me the screen.

“The image quality is low.”

I looked at the photo again.

The man looked exactly like Daniel.

But the officer continued.

“There’s another issue.”

“What?”

“The timestamp.”

I froze.

“What about it?”

“The photo metadata has been removed.”

My heart sank.

Meaning?

“Someone edited it.”

I closed my eyes.

So even this could be a lie.

Everything was lies.

My husband.

My mother-in-law.

My family.

My memories.

The doctor entered.

“Mrs. Parker?”

I turned.

“Yes?”

“Your daughter is ready to be discharged.”

For a moment, I felt relief.

Then fear returned.

Because leaving the hospital meant entering the world again.

A world where someone wanted my daughter hurt.

We prepared quickly.

The police arranged a safe location.

A protected house.

No one knew where we were going.

No one except the officers.

Or so I thought.

As we walked through the underground parking area, Lily held my hand tightly.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Are we going home?”

I looked at her.

I wished I could say yes.

But home wasn’t safe anymore.

“No, baby.”

She looked sad.

“Why?”

I swallowed.

“Because we need to find out the truth.”

She nodded.

Children shouldn’t understand those words.

But Lily did.

Too well.

We reached the police vehicle.

The officer opened the door.

Then stopped.

His hand moved toward his weapon.

I noticed.

“What happened?”

He pointed.

The car windshield.

There was something written on it.

In red.

My blood froze.

The words:

“YOU WERE WARNED.”

The parking area went silent.

The officer immediately moved us back.

“Everyone stay behind me.”

My heart raced.

“How did they get here?”

No one answered.

Because there was only one possibility.

Someone knew.

Someone always knew.

The officer checked the vehicle.

Nothing.

No one nearby.

Just the message.

A threat.

A warning.

A reminder.

They could reach us anywhere.

Then Lily suddenly spoke.

Quietly.

“Mommy…”

I looked down.

“What?”

She pointed at the car.

“That's not what Grandma wrote.”

I froze.

“What?”

She looked confused.

“That handwriting.”

My heart pounded.

“You know Grandma’s handwriting?”

Lily nodded.

“She writes letters for me.”

I looked at the message again.

The officer noticed.

“You think it’s not her?”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed.

“Grandma makes her letters very neat.”

A pause.

“This is messy.”

The officer and I looked at each other.

Someone else was involved.

Not Evelyn.

Someone else.

The police moved us immediately.

A different vehicle.

A different route.

A different safe location.

But the question stayed in my mind.

Who was behind all of this?

At the safe house, Lily finally fell asleep.

I sat alone in the kitchen.

The flash drive Daniel left was in front of me.

“Emma — Watch This Alone.”

I had avoided it.

Because I was scared.

Scared of what I would find.

But after everything…

I needed answers.

I plugged it into the laptop.

One file appeared.

Only one.

The title:

“FOR EMMA.”

My hands trembled.

I clicked.

The screen stayed black.

Then Daniel appeared.

My breath stopped.

It wasn’t a photo.

It was a video.

A real video.

Daniel.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

Looking exhausted.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

I covered my mouth.

“Daniel…”

His voice played.

“If you’re watching this…”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Then something happened.”

My eyes filled with tears.

He continued.

“I don’t know if I survived.”

I froze.

What?

“If I’m gone, I need you to know the truth.”

The video shook slightly.

Like he was recording in a hurry.

“I lied to you.”

My heart cracked.

“No…”

Daniel looked at the camera.

“I lied because I was trying to protect you.”

He paused.

“Not from my mother.”

I stopped breathing.

“From someone much closer.”

The room felt colder.

Daniel continued.

“Emma, there is one person you trusted more than anyone.”

I leaned closer.

My hands shook.

“One person who had access to our home.”

A pause.

“One person who knew everything about us.”

The video froze for a second.

Then Daniel whispered:

“And I think that person killed my father.”

My heart pounded.

My father-in-law.

Evelyn’s husband.

Daniel’s father.

The man everyone said died years ago.

Daniel continued.

“I found proof.”

The screen flickered.

“She didn’t just destroy him.”

A pause.

“She destroyed anyone who tried to expose her.”

I stared.

Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.

“Emma, if you’re watching this…”

His eyes filled with sadness.

“I need you to understand.”

“I didn’t leave you.”

“I was running.”

My tears fell.

“Running from who?”

Daniel looked terrified.

And then he answered.

A name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made my entire body go cold.

“Emma…”

“Your father.”

The video stopped.

I sat frozen.

Because Daniel’s final warning wasn’t about Evelyn.

It wasn’t about the woman who raised him.

It was about someone else.

My father.

A man who had been gone from my life for years.

A man I thought was dead.

A man Daniel had never mentioned.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard in years.

“Emma.”

My blood froze.

“Dad?”

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“Your husband was never supposed to tell you.”

The call ended.

May you like

And somewhere inside the safe house…

A door creaked open.
