Part 10: The Final Secret Daniel Hid

Part 10: The Final Secret Daniel Hid

The room was silent.

Too silent.

Everyone was looking at Evelyn.

The woman who had been accused of poisoning my daughter.

The woman who disappeared.

The woman who had terrified us for days.

And yet…

She stood there calmly.

Not running.

Not hiding.

Almost like she wanted to be found.

I stared at her.

My hands shook.

“You expect me to believe you?”

Evelyn’s expression didn’t change.

“No.”

She looked toward Lily’s room.

“I expect you to listen.”

The officer stepped forward.

“Mrs. Parker, you need to put your hands where we can see them.”

She slowly raised them.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”

I laughed bitterly.

“My daughter was in the hospital.”

Her face changed.

A flicker of sadness.

“I know.”

“You know?”

My voice cracked.

“You know because you did it.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“No, Emma.”

She looked at me.

“You still don’t understand.”

I felt anger rising.

“Then explain.”

She took a breath.

“Daniel wasn’t running from me.”

A pause.

“He was running from what he discovered.”

The officer watched her carefully.

“What did he discover?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Something that could destroy powerful people.”

My father suddenly spoke.

“Stop.”

Everyone turned.

His face was pale.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent.”

Evelyn looked at him.

Almost disappointed.

“Still protecting your lies?”

My father stepped forward.

“I know what you did.”

She smiled.

“No.”

Her voice became colder.

“You know what you think you saw.”

My heart pounded.

“Enough.”

I stepped between them.

“No more riddles.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“Tell me the truth.”

Her eyes moved to me.

And for the first time…

I saw something different.

Not anger.

Not cruelty.

Pain.

Deep pain.

“Daniel was investigating his father.”

I froze.

“My husband’s father?”

She nodded.

“He found files.”

“What files?”

“Financial records. Medical records. Names.”

She looked down.

“Children.”

The room became cold.

“The substance found in Lily…”

Her voice shook slightly.

“Was connected to a research project.”

The officer frowned.

“Research project?”

Evelyn nodded.

“A secret one.”

My stomach turned.

“Using children?”

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

My hands covered my mouth.

No.

It couldn’t be true.

But suddenly everything connected.

The repeated exposure.

The doctor’s words.

“This wasn’t a one-time exposure.”

Someone wasn’t just hurting Lily.

Someone was studying her.

Testing something.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because I didn’t know who was listening.”

I shook my head.

“You expect me to believe that?”

She looked at me.

“Emma, do you know why Daniel married you?”

My heart tightened.

Not again.

Everyone kept asking that.

Why did Daniel choose me?

Evelyn continued.

“Because of your father.”

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

My chest hurt.

“Explain.”

Evelyn continued.

“Your father was one of the people who helped hide those experiments.”

My father closed his eyes.

The truth was finally coming out.

“He wanted to expose them later.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“But he was too afraid.”

My father whispered:

“I tried to fix it.”

Evelyn laughed softly.

A sad laugh.

“You always say that.”

I looked between them.

“You both knew?”

Neither answered.

That was answer enough.

My entire family knew.

Except me.

Daniel.

My father.

Evelyn.

Everyone.

Everyone except me.

I felt betrayed.

Not by one person.

By all of them.

“Why?”

My voice broke.

“Why did nobody tell me?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because you were the only innocent person left.”

I stared.

“What?”

She stepped closer.

“Your father’s name was in those files.”

I froze.

“Daniel discovered it.”

My heart pounded.

“He wanted to tell you.”

“But then?”

Evelyn looked down.

“Someone attacked him.”

The officer stepped forward.

“Who?”

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Victoria.”

The hidden sister.

Daniel’s sister.

The woman who didn’t exist.

My father looked terrified.

“She’s alive?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She never left.”

A chill moved through the room.

“Where is she?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“She’s closer than you think.”

Before anyone could react—

The lights went out.

Again.

A scream came from upstairs.

Not Lily.

A police officer ran toward the hallway.

“Everyone stay back!”

A sound.

A crash.

Then silence.

The emergency lights turned on.

The officer was gone.

Only his radio remained.

Lying on the floor.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice came through.

A woman’s voice.

“Emma.”

Everyone froze.

Victoria.

She was speaking through the radio.

“You should have stopped digging.”

My heart pounded.

“Where is my daughter?”

Silence.

Then a laugh.

A quiet laugh.

“Always the mother.”

I stepped forward.

“Where is Lily?”

The voice answered:

“Safe.”

A pause.

“For now.”

My blood froze.

Evelyn looked around.

Terrified.

Not pretending.

Actually terrified.

“Victoria…”

She whispered.

“You don’t have to do this.”

The radio crackled.

“Don’t pretend you care.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

And said:

“I loved him.”

Silence.

Then Victoria answered:

“That’s why you’re weak.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“Him?”

She looked at me.

“Daniel.”

My heart stopped.

Victoria hated Evelyn.

Not because of the family.

Because of Daniel.

The radio continued:

“Emma.”

I stepped closer.

“What?”

“You want the truth?”

My hands shook.

“Yes.”

“Then ask Evelyn what happened the night Daniel disappeared.”

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

My heart sank.

“Evelyn?”

She didn’t answer.

The radio voice laughed.

“I’ll tell you.”

A pause.

“Daniel wasn’t injured in the accident.”

My breath caught.

“He was attacked afterward.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“Is that true?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

“What happened?”

Evelyn whispered:

“I found him.”

My heart raced.

“Where?”

“Near the car.”

“Alive?”

She nodded.

“Barely.”

“Then why did you leave him?”

Her face collapsed.

“I didn’t.”

A tear fell.

“Someone else came.”

“Who?”

She whispered:

“Victoria.”

My body went cold.

“She wanted him dead.”

The radio crackled.

Victoria laughed.

“And she still thinks she’s the hero.”

The lights flickered.

Then the main door opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood outside.

Dark hair.

Calm face.

Holding a small object.

A phone.

She smiled.

“Hello, Emma.”

My blood froze.

Because she looked familiar.

Not because I had met her.

But because she looked exactly like Daniel.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same face shape.

Victoria.

Daniel’s sister.

The woman who was erased from history.

She stepped inside.

And said:

“You’ve spent eleven months searching for your husband.”

She smiled.

“But you never asked the most important question.”

I couldn’t speak.

She looked directly at me.

“Why did Daniel really choose you?”

The room went silent.

Victoria raised her phone.

On the screen was a video.

Daniel.

Alive.

Speaking.

And this time…

He wasn’t warning me.

He was confessing.

Victoria smiled.

“Your husband didn’t just hide a secret from you, Emma.”

“He hid himself.”

The video began playing.

And Daniel’s voice filled the room.

“I’m sorry, Emma.”

“I never wanted you to know.”

A pause.

“But Lily isn’t my only child.”

My entire world stopped.

Daniel continued:

“The truth is…”

“I had another daughter before you.”

And Victoria whispered:

“The child you’ve been protecting…”

“Is not the only child Daniel created.”

The screen went black.

And I realized…

The biggest secret had never been Evelyn.

Never been my father.

Never been Victoria.

It was Daniel.

The man I loved.

The man I trusted.

The man I thought I knew.

May you like

And now I had to find out…

Who he really was.
