Part 9: The Child Who Wasn’t Alone

Part 9: The Child Who Wasn’t Alone
The whisper came again.
“Mommy…”
My entire body went cold.
Because it sounded like Lily.
My daughter.
My little girl.
But Lily was upstairs.
With the officers.
Safe.
At least…
That was what I thought.
My father grabbed my arm.
“Emma.”
His voice was low.
“Don’t go near that door.”
I pulled away.
“Why?”
He looked terrified.
“Because that’s what they want.”
My heart pounded.
“They?”
He didn’t answer.
And that scared me more.
The sound came again.
A small cry.
“Mommy, please…”
Every instinct in me screamed.
My child needed me.
I didn’t care about traps.
I didn’t care about danger.
I ran toward the stairs.
“Lily!”
My father followed.
“Emma, wait!”
I reached the top floor.
The hallway was dark.
The emergency lights were still on.
At the end of the hallway was the locked room.
The room where the voice came from.
My hands shook.
I moved closer.
“Lily?”
Silence.
Then—
A tiny voice.
“Mommy…”
My heart broke.
I reached for the handle.
But my father grabbed me.
“No.”
I turned.
“What is wrong with you?”
His face was pale.
“That’s not Lily.”
The words made me freeze.
“What?”
He whispered:
“Listen.”
The hallway became silent.
I waited.
Then I heard it.
A sound.
A tiny sound.
Almost impossible to notice.
A mechanical clicking.
Like a recording.
My blood ran cold.
The voice.
It wasn’t real.
Someone was playing a recording.
Someone wanted me to open the door.
My father looked at me.
“Step away.”
The police officers from downstairs suddenly rushed up.
“What happened?”
I pointed.
“Someone is inside that room.”
They immediately surrounded the door.
One officer checked the lock.
“Locked from outside.”
The other looked confused.
“Then how did the sound come from inside?”
No one answered.
Because we all knew.
Someone had planned this.
The officer forced the door open.
The room was empty.
Completely empty.
No person.
No child.
Nothing.
Except one thing.
A small recorder sitting in the middle of the floor.
The officer picked it up carefully.
“Evidence.”
I stared at it.
My hands became cold.
Because there was a note attached.
Written in the same handwriting as Daniel’s.
“Emma.”
My breath stopped.
The officer opened it.
Inside:
“Stop looking for the past.”
“Or the past will find Lily.”
I felt anger.
Real anger.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Anger.
Someone was playing with my daughter.
Someone was using her voice.
Someone thought they could control me.
I turned to the officer.
“Find whoever did this.”
He nodded.
“We will.”
But my father looked at the recorder.
And he looked afraid.
“You know something.”
I turned toward him.
“What?”
He didn’t speak.
“Dad.”
His eyes met mine.
“I know where Daniel went.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“After the accident.”
Everyone looked at him.
The officer stepped forward.
“You said you found him alive?”
My father nodded.
“Yes.”
“Where did he go?”
My father swallowed.
“He disappeared.”
“Who helped him?”
A long pause.
Then:
“I did.”
My world stopped.
“You helped him disappear?”
He nodded.
“Why?”
His eyes filled with pain.
“Because he asked me to.”
I stared.
“Why would Daniel ask you?”
My father looked at me.
“Because he knew someone was trying to kill him.”
“And he knew the person wouldn’t stop.”
“Even after he disappeared.”
The officer crossed his arms.
“Who was the person?”
My father looked at me.
And said:
“Your husband’s sister.”
I froze.
“Daniel had a sister?”
The officer looked confused too.
“That wasn’t in any family records.”
My father nodded.
“Because she was erased.”
Erased.
That word felt familiar.
Like every person in this story had been hidden.
“What was her name?”
My father answered:
“Victoria.”
A name I had never heard.
A person who supposedly didn’t exist.
“Where is she now?”
My father looked down.
“I don’t know.”
“But she knows where Daniel is.”
I felt dizzy.
A missing sister.
A hidden family.
A husband who might still be alive.
A mother-in-law who was lying.
A father who disappeared.
My entire life was built on secrets.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
The officer motioned for me not to answer.
But I did.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then a man’s voice.
A voice I recognized.
My heart stopped.
“Emma.”
I covered my mouth.
“Daniel?”
Everyone looked at me.
The voice continued.
“I’m sorry.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“Where are you?”
A pause.
“I can’t tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because they’re listening.”
I looked around.
My father.
The officers.
The empty room.
Everyone was silent.
Daniel whispered:
“Emma, you need to listen carefully.”
“I only have one chance.”
My voice broke.
“You’re alive.”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
My knees almost collapsed.
“Why didn’t you come home?”
Silence.
Then his voice changed.
Pain.
Fear.
“I tried.”
My eyes filled.
“Then why?”
“Because someone inside our family was helping them.”
My heart tightened.
“Who?”
A long pause.
Then:
“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.”
I closed my eyes.
“Daniel, tell me.”
His breathing became heavier.
“Emma…”
“Yes?”
“Lily is not the only child they targeted.”
My blood froze.
“What?”
“There were others.”
My stomach dropped.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel whispered:
“The poisoning.”
I gripped the phone.
“What?”
“They weren’t testing on Lily.”
A pause.
“They were testing on children.”
The room went silent.
The officer’s expression changed.
Daniel continued.
“Your mother-in-law wasn’t working alone.”
My heart raced.
“Who was with her?”
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“The person who started everything.”
I waited.
My hands shook.
“Who?”
The line became quiet.
Too quiet.
Then a voice came from behind me.
A voice that wasn’t Daniel.
A voice that made everyone turn.
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Cold.
“Because I’m right here.”
I slowly turned.
Standing at the bottom of the stairs…
Was Evelyn.
Alive.
Smiling.
And holding a phone.
The call with Daniel was still connected.
The officers raised their weapons.
“Don’t move!”
But Evelyn didn’t look scared.
She looked relieved.
Like she had been waiting.
She looked directly at me.
And said:
“Emma…”
“You finally found the truth.”
I stared at her.
“You tried to kill my daughter.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
My anger rose.
“Don’t lie.”
She smiled sadly.
“I was trying to save her.”
Everyone froze.
The room went silent.
“What?”
Evelyn looked at me.
“Your husband is the one who put Lily in danger.”
My heart stopped.
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“Daniel never told you what he really did.”
The phone in my hand went silent.
The call ended.
Evelyn continued:
“He didn’t disappear to protect you.”
“He disappeared because he was guilty.”
My world shattered.
Because after everything…
May you like
After all the lies…
I didn’t know who was telling the truth anymore.
