Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Armand

By four o'clock, the storm inside Belladonna House reached its absolute climax.
Two dozen armed private security officers from the Vale Syndicate stood stationed throughout the main foyer, ensuring that not a single piece of estate property was removed.
In the center of the marble hall stood Julian Armand and Celeste Armand.
Julian was carrying a small cardboard box containing his personal paperwork, his expensive suit rumpled, his eyes wild and hollowed with absolute defeat.
Celeste stood beside him, still wearing her silk gown, her hair disheveled, weeping hysterically as two guards stood over her luggage pile, inspecting every bag to ensure she wasn't taking any estate jewelry.
The heavy oak doors at the top of the grand staircase opened.
Mara Ellis walked out onto the landing.
She was no longer wearing her black cotton service dress or her linen apron.
She wore a breathtaking, custom-tailored dark emerald-green trousersuit made of heavy Italian silk. Her short, blunt-cut hair was styled neatly around her jawline, framing her high cheekbones and dark brown eyes. She walked down the marble stairs with a slow, regal grace, her high heels clicking softly against the stone, every movement radiating an undeniable, ancient authority.
Walking one step behind her was Lucian Vale.
The sixty staff members gathered in the hall—the chefs, the housekeepers, the footmen, and the guards—all turned to look at Mara. Not a single person spoke. The silence in the room was absolute.
Mara reached the bottom of the staircase and stopped ten feet from Celeste.
Celeste looked up, her face splotched with red, her tear-stained eyes wide with a horrific blend of shock, rage, and absolute embarrassment.
“You...” Celeste gasped, her voice trembling violently. “You... you stole my life!”
Mara looked down at the trembling socialite. There was no hatred in her eyes, no vindictive pleasure, no petty anger. There was only the cold, clear clarity of a woman who had reclaimed her birthright.
“I didn't steal anything, Miss Armand,” Mara said, her voice carrying clearly across the grand foyer. “I simply took back what your father stole from my grandfather thirty years ago.”
Julian Armand dropped his cardboard box to the marble floor, falling to his knees, clutching his hands together. “Miss Vance... please! Have mercy! We have nowhere to go! My accounts are empty!”
Mara looked at the broken man who had forced her mother into hiding, who had allowed her to grow up in poverty while his daughter wore emeralds paid for with stolen money.
“Your personal debt to the Vance estate has been calculated at forty-two million dollars, Mr. Armand,” Mara stated calmly. “My legal team will allow you to keep your personal pension to avoid total destitution. But you and your daughter have fifteen minutes to step outside my gates.”
She turned her eyes to Celeste.
“And if you ever step foot on Vance property again,” Mara added softly, “my security team will treat you as a common trespasser.”
Celeste opened her mouth to scream, to hurl insults, to strike out, but two tall security officers stepped between her and Mara, grabbing her firmly by her elbows and forcing her toward the grand front doors.
As the heavy iron-reinforced oak doors slammed shut behind the disgraced Armand family, a quiet murmur moved through the assembled estate staff.
Mara turned around to face the sixty workers she had scrubbed floors beside for three years.

“Return to your posts,” Mara commanded gently, a soft, warm smile touching her lips. “The estate will operate on schedule.”
The staff bowed their heads in deep, genuine respect, returning to their duties with an energy and discipline that Belladonna House had not seen in decades.
