Chapter 9 - The Sovereign of the Docks

Three weeks later.

The morning sky over the Atlantic coast was clear, blue, and crisp, casting a blinding glare across the vast deep-water docks of the newly renamed Vance Maritime Terminal.

A sleek black sedan pulled to a halt near the main pier, where three massive container ships were unloading thousands of steel freight boxes under the roar of massive electric cranes.

Mara Vance stepped out of the rear seat.

She wore a long, charcoal wool overcoat over a cream silk blouse and dark trousers. Her short dark hair moved gently in the salt breeze, framing her clear, confident face. In her gloved right hand, she held an encrypted electronic tablet displaying real-time shipping vectors across four continents.

Beside her, stepping out from the driver's side, was Lucian Vale.

He had removed his suit jacket, wearing a simple black sweater and trousers, looking relaxed, confident, and entirely at peace as he walked beside her toward the edge of the pier.

“The Rotterdam clearance speeds have increased by fourteen percent since you redeployed the manual tracking algorithms,” Lucian remarked, looking out at the massive ships docked along the stone pier.

“The previous management was relying on outdated automated servers,” Mara replied without looking up from her tablet, her fingers tapping out a quick code update. “They didn't understand how variable ocean currents affect fuel consumption rates in the North Sea. It was sloppy.”

Lucian let out a low, rough laugh—a sound so rare and genuine that several security officers standing nearby turned their heads in surprise.

“You've been the official owner of this shipping line for twenty-one days, Mara,” Lucian murmured, stepping behind her, placing his broad hands gently over her shoulders, leaning down near her ear. “And you've already made my chief technology officer look like an amateur.”

Mara paused, setting her tablet down on the wooden guardrail. She turned around in his embrace, her dark brown eyes looking up into his cold grey ones, which were now filled with an overwhelming warmth.

“Your chief technology officer was taking a salary for work I was doing from a basement office while wearing a housekeeping apron,” Mara said, a small, playful smirk touching her lips. “I am merely optimizing my investment.”

Lucian’s grey eyes softened completely. He reached out his right hand, his broad, warm fingers gently tracing the sharp, clean line of her short hair where it brushed against her jawline.

“Do you miss it?” Lucian asked softly. “Your long hair?”

Mara looked out over the vast, shimmering expanse of the Atlantic Ocean—at the ships bearing her family's name, at the estate sitting proudly on the bluff behind them, and at the man who had torn down an empire just to stand by her side.

She reached up, her fingers sliding over his hand, pressing his palm firmly against her cheek.

“Not for a single second, Lucian,” Mara whispered. “It was far too heavy for what I had to build.”
