Chapter 3 - The Ghost in Trauma Room 1

The emergency room at Denver General Hospital was locked down under Dr. Vance's personal directive.

I was rushed directly into surgery. For four agonizing hours, a team of three surgeons fought to repair the massive internal uterine rupture that Ryan had dismissed as a "heavy period." I received eight units of blood, four units of plasma, and underwent a complex surgical intervention to save my life.

Outside the operating room, Ethan was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. His dehydration was severe, but thanks to Clara’s swift actions, his vitals began to stabilize under the warming lights.

When I finally opened my eyes twenty-four hours later, the harsh white lights of the ICU blurred above me. My throat was dry, raw from the intubation tube.

"Emma," a gentle voice whispered.

I turned my head slowly. Clara was sitting beside my bed, her eyes red-rimmed, holding a paper cup of water to my lips.

"Clara..." I gasped, my voice barely a raspy shadow. "Ethan... where is Ethan?"

"He's safe, sweetheart," Clara said softly, tears glistening in her eyes as she stroked my hair. "He’s in the NICU downstairs. He’s drinking, his vitals are strong, and he’s going to be completely fine. You saved him."

A tear slipped down my cheek, soaking into the white hospital pillow. Memories of the nursery came rushing back—the pain, the cold, Ryan’s sneering face as he adjusted his sweater mirror.

"Ryan..." I whispered, horror choking my throat. "He left... he left us..."

Clara’s expression instantly turned to stone. She leaned closer, her tone sharp and precise. "Ryan is still in Aspen, Emma. He’s been drinking, posting videos, and living it up while you were literally dying on the floor."

"Did he... did he call?"

"No," Clara said flatly. "And he can't. I broke your phone, took your SIM card, and wiped your digital tracking. As far as Ryan Carter knows, you are still at home."

I stared at my sister, my mind struggling to process her words through the haze of pain medication. "What... what do you mean?"

Clara pulled a chair right up to my bed and gripped my hands tightly. "Emma, if you go back to him, he will eventually kill you. He left a mother and a ten-day-old infant to die because he didn't want his birthday weekend ruined. That isn't negligence; that is sociopathy."

"I know," I whispered, a cold wave of hatred washing over the remnant of my heartbreak. "I saw his video... while I was lying in my own blood."

"Then hear me clearly," Clara said, her eyes flashing with fierce intelligence. "He returns tomorrow afternoon. When he walks into that house, he is going to find the dried blood and an empty crib. He is going to assume the worst. I want you to let him believe it."

I gasped softly. "Clara..."

"Just for a few days," Clara pressed, her voice dripping with calculated strategy. "While he panics, while he tries to cover his tracks to save his own skin, my legal team will file for emergency sole custody, execute a complete asset lock, and prepare a criminal complaint for felony abandonment and attempted reckless homicide. We are going to strip him of everything before he even realizes you’re breathing."

I closed my eyes, remembering the cold laughter in Ryan's voice as he walked out the door. The man I loved was dead to me.

"Do it," I whispered, opening my eyes with an unyielding coldness that surprised even my sister. "Let him think he's a widower."
