Chapter 9 - The Downfall

The downfall of Ryan Carter was swift, public, and brutal.
Within forty-eight hours of his eviction, news of the security footage leaked to the Denver press. Headlines across the state blared the terrifying story: TECH EXECUTIVE HUSBAND ABANDONS BLEEDING POSTPARTUM WIFE FOR BIRTHDAY TRIP, FILMED SCRUBBING BLOOD WITH MOTHER.
The public outrage was explosive. Thousands of women flooded Ryan's company’s social media pages, demanding his immediate termination.
By Tuesday afternoon, the board of directors at his financial firm held an emergency meeting and voted unanimously to fire Ryan for severe breach of moral conduct and reputational destruction. His corporate career was over before thirty-one.
Two days later, Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies executed arrest warrants at Eleanor Carter’s gated estate.
Ryan and his mother were led out of her home in handcuffs, surrounded by news cameras flashing from every angle. Eleanor was caught on camera screaming at reporters, her pristine social standing completely incinerated, while Ryan walked with his head bowed, weeping quietly into his orange jumpsuit.
They were formally charged with felony destruction of evidence, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and reckless endangerment. Because of the overwhelming video evidence and financial asset freezes, no high-priced defense attorney could undo the damage.
A month later, the final divorce and custody hearings were held inside a quiet, high-security courtroom in Denver.
Ryan sat at the defense table, wearing a drab grey prison jumpsuit, his hands restrained by belly chains. Beside him, Eleanor sat in a matching jumpsuit, her hair unkempt, her eyes hollow and defeated.
Judge Sarah Jenkins looked down from her bench at Ryan, her expression filled with severe disdain.
"Mr. Carter," Judge Jenkins read from the final decree, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such a profound display of cold-hearted selfishness and moral depravity. You abandoned your wife while she was actively bleeding to death, left an infant without care, and then attempted to destroy the physical evidence of your negligence to protect your own vanity."
She slammed her gavel down with a sharp, thunderous crack.
"The court grants Mrs. Emma Carter full, exclusive legal and physical custody of Ethan Carter, with zero visitation rights for the respondent. Furthermore, seventy-five percent of all marital assets are awarded to the petitioner as civil restitution, and a permanent, lifetime restraining order is issued against both Ryan Carter and Eleanor Carter."
Ryan collapsed forward onto the defense table, sobbing uncontrollably as the bailiffs pulled him to his feet to march him back to the holding cells.

I stood up from my seat beside Marcus and Clara, holding two-month-old Ethan tight against my chest. As Ryan was led past me, he caught my eye one last time, his lips moving as he mouthed the words: I'm sorry.
I didn't answer. I didn't need to. I simply turned my back on him and walked out of the courtroom into the bright Colorado sunshine.
