Chapter 8 - The Trap Closes

Ryan scrambled to his feet, turning toward the deputies with desperate, wild eyes. "Officers! You can't throw me out of my own house! I pay the mortgage! This is my property!"

The lead deputy pulled a laminated court order from his pocket and held it in front of Ryan's face. "Mr. Carter, this judge’s order grants Mrs. Carter exclusive occupancy of this residence effective immediately. Furthermore, a temporary restraining order prohibits you from coming within five hundred feet of Mrs. Carter or your infant son."

"She’s setting me up!" Ryan screamed, his professional composure completely disintegrating into hysterical panic. "She hid from me! She tried to ruin my reputation!"

"Mr. Carter," Marcus Vance, my attorney, stepped up the porch steps, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "I suggest you save your vocal cords for the grand jury hearing next month."

Ryan went dead rigid. "Grand... grand jury?"

"Indeed," Marcus smiled pleasantly. "While you and your mother, Eleanor Carter, were busy scrubbing the nursery rug with bleach yesterday afternoon between two and five PM, a private security camera recorded the entire event."

Ryan’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. "What?!"

"We have high-definition audio and video of your mother suggesting you frame Emma for child desertion," Marcus continued, pulling a small tablet from his briefcase and tapping the screen.

The speaker on the tablet blasted Eleanor’s voice clearly across the front porch:

"If Emma died, it’s her own fault for not managing her health... I will not let a girl from a working-class family destroy everything we’ve built because she couldn't handle a little postpartum bleeding... We scrub this room clean before anyone sees it."

Followed immediately by Ryan’s cheerful response: "Yeah... heartbroken husband. That works."

The deputies on the porch looked at Ryan with expressions of utter disgust. The lead officer took a step closer to him, his hand gripping his handcuffs. "Well, isn't that sweet."

Ryan backed away into the foyer, his hands clutching his head as if it were about to explode. "No, no, no! That was taken out of context! My mom was just trying to protect me! We thought she was dead!"

"Which makes your decision to scrub the crime scene and hide the evidence even more damning," Marcus stated coolly. "The District Attorney’s office has already reviewed the footage. Warrants for felony tampering with physical evidence, conspiracy, and criminal child abandonment are being prepared as we speak."

"You... you ruined me," Ryan whispered, staring at me with a mixture of terror and unbridled hatred. "You ruined my life!"

"You ruined yourself the moment you walked over my bleeding body to go party in Aspen," I replied, my voice cold, calm, and absolute. "Now get out of my house."
